Release notes for April 11, 2013.

The Forum Malvanum
Take part in the Great Race! Mysterious alien rings have appeared in the sky above Millennium City. Ironclad says they could be Malvan, but nobody is sure why they are here. In any case, they seem to be laid out to form some sort of racetrack-in-the-sky. Talk to Sapphire in the air about Renaissance Center to find out more...

Other
UNTIL has consulted with Ironclad for his knowledge of gladiatorial fashion. Heroes can now select "both" when using the Alien Gladiator Pauldron, and Alien Gladiator Armor is no longer in the Jackets category.

After reading on PTS that this race is not ground character (non-flight) friendly, unless you have a vehicle, I can honestly say that I'm glad to be missing this "event" too since most of my characters are ground based.

I'll likely miss out too as every time they do an update or maintenance it messes up my launcher and each time i have to hassle a friend for the latest exe file for the launcher. and then by the time i get it, there's an update or maintenance coming.

Unless after the patch is complete you'll upload the file for those of us who have this recurring issue, trailturle?

Simply get a device that gives you a flight power. Vampire, ghost, and toy soldier all do the trick.

Shouldn't be forced to. It's just bad form. I've no interest in Become Devices or Vehicles. Like I said, glad I'm missing this one too.

I don't get why people complain about events like this. At least it's SOMETHING! Not every event is going to appeal to every player, that would be impossible. Feel like you are being "forced" to fly for your non-flyers? OK. It's a Gladiator based event, right? How many Gladiators "wanted" to fight for their lives? Few I'm sure. They fought because they HAD to. In this case you don't have to. Simply sit out this event and chalk it up to "not one for you" this go around.

I haven't been on test to see it and if it's anything like that in the video, I'll sit it out too. Likely hundreds will enjoy it. Good for them.

The problem is that what precious little content we're getting is requiring you to use a system which is locked behind a pay wall. Even STO has the decency to give you free base model ships.

My biggest concern isn't really my ability to play this particular event or not, it's that what little content development time they have is being pigeon holed into these events that don't add any lasting value to the game. Events work very well as filler in between large content pushes, but they don't expand the game at all. When this event ends, they latest piece of regular content that was added was Whiteout which was release in 2011.

Usually when an MMO adds new content that is only meant for a portion of it's players, like tiered raiding, there are understandable gates to entry. Temporary events like this in a game that's already content-starved shouldn't fundamentally exclude a sizable portion of it's relatively small player base. There should be an event NPC that grants a hover disc so non-flight heroes can participate without having to jump through hoops that aren't part of the event. Brou mentioned going to Sky Command to grab a flight disc. While that works, it really shouldn't be an option.

Quoting again because, yes, this (still) works. Yes, it'll launch with a single person in it (bug).

Also, good idea showing a pic where the reward platform is at the end, TT, as you can easily shoot past it when you win.

Sadly, the quest reward (Q, one of 3 costumes, and random mods) is only once a day.

I know, right!? the owners of DCUO should sue the owners of CO for copying them, then the owners of Spiderman 2: the official videogame should sue the owners of DCUO, then the owners of sonic the hedgehog should sue every game in existence that uses rings as a system for you to run or fly through. Then whoever invented the hoop should sue, and the courts can then dismiss it on the grounds of "it's all been done before, no one's copying anyone"

*Drops a truck-full of manure on heroshima1's desk*

Why are you complaining? It's SOMETHING!

Sorry, but that line of skewed reason is as bogus as a three and a half dollar bill. Being "grateful" for whatever crap they happen to squeeze out, regardless is nothing more than rampant fanboyism.

The reason people are complaining about this is this forcibly segregates the community into haves and have-nots.
Don't have a flight power? Just buy...(and so on).

Or just respec! Whoops! Costs money!

Or just grind Q. MAYBE you'll have enough to buy something before the event ends!

How about they put out REAL, PERMANENT content that EVERYONE can do and stop farting around with this extraneous garbage?

    ^ This.

the problem i see is it's a limited event for those who have flight abilities, as he pointed out, by the time they do waste their play time grinding for ways to retcon, global, q whatever the event could well be over by then.

Sure, you can argue "There's plenty of time, it's not like it'll be removed within a few days"

but I said the same thing to myself to justify not spending 12+ hours straight trying to farm backup! devices during the omega destroid event and yet it did.

If it were a permanent thing, maybe it could be justified, but only if they had regular enough content that everyone could enjoy, and lockboxes doesn't count.

It's pretty clear to me that this is just a sad way for them to try selling the overglorified become devices (otherwise known as vehicles). Though I guess if they sell enough perhaps they can finally resolve the 'tech issues' that is preventing us from getting permanent content.

You know there's an issue when people start accepting the idea of a bunch of temporary non-holiday events over permanent content simply because it's "something new to this game".

On a side note about this race: Does it matter if you come in first or last? Long as you finish the race to get X points to get tokens for? Since I know there will be players with faster TP/vehicles than I, I don't expect to be on the top of the list every time.

Because sometime, the glass really is half-empty.

Admittedly, an event specifically designed to exclude part of the player base (the ones who like their acrobatic heroes) may not fit that bill.

Perhaps people are just tired of having their play style unsupported by the studio.

    Why does this keep happening?
Champions has no consistent direction and never has. Those who remember beta and launch will remember how much of a misstep vehicles were to the overall lore of a SUPERHERO game. When players continued to ask for vehicles as TRAVEL POWERS.. PWE saw an opportunity to make a whole new leveling system in vehicles... likely because the game is performing so poorly and it "works in Star Trek Online". The same reason we got a throw away Neverwinter map masked as "the High Pan Alert".

I see the writing on the wall, I predict market trends all day long. So get ready to play Star Trek/Neverwinter throw aways for a LONG time. Champions devs are very obviously planning a flight based expansion (space most likely) and want as many people to buy into these crappy vehicles as possible so they can justify such a BAD decision. If you came to play a superhero game.. you are in the wrong place.

It's vehicle compulsory? Huh. That's a first, out of the stuff they've released thus far.
    Hmm.
I guess I need to go actually GET a vehicle then, to try out this content.
Although I kinda don't actually want a vehicle just to do this. I'd rather get a vehicle for the sake of "character would likely use a vehicle to travel", which doesn't work thematically for all of them.
    Sigh.
I'm not often negative about the game, so I'm just going to say I'll probably not try out this race thing, unless I can get enough questionite or zen between now and when this event finishes to buy a hoverbike.
Hopefully it's fun enough to warrant the grind I'll need to do, as I am bad at saving up Zen or Questionite.

This event. This is why vehicles should be completely unbound like actual Become devices.

My only gripe is that the boost from the rings makes me go TOO FAST. Also, this event doesn't sate my gladiator-murdering bloodlust.

Also, the wait's too long. 2 minute race, 2 minute wait time would be better.

And now I'm running into all of the bugs: Race Failures, being punted to the side, not getting the reward (500 points, 9th place) >_>

Check in the general discussion forum. TT's stickied a thread there about the race - basically, the rings aren't acting the way they apparently did on PTS. They're working on it, and he'll update us with any changes.

Theoretically, this race should only require that you be able to fly - it's a race against the clock, not against the other players, and the ranking system is only for our amusement. In practice, well, it's not working right. On the plus side (and I realize it's not much of a plus, but hey), at least nothing else broke when they put this Live!

Its its a race against the clock, then the timer should start when you pass through the first ring and not wait every ten minutes to get another chance at auto failure.

The biggest issue here is that using a prototype decreased your chances of completing this because you move so fast that the server doesn't register you passing through a ring even though you physically did.

When were we supposed to be rewarded for purchasing those again?

I completely agree that they should have some way for everyone to participate, such as a temp vehicle. It would add more potential participants. However, there are those that would still complain complain because it "doesn't fit their character concept." At least that would be a smaller overall percentage.

Actually, I never said "grateful." I'm on board with most people in agreeing I'd rather more permanent content over temporary events that pigeonhole their customer base. The fact remains that CO is working with a limited crew and it's likely this is all they can muster at the present time. If you take that same crew and put them on a more permanent content update, it would likely take minimum a year to even hit test. How would the player base react to that? While I share your opinion, I'm more of a realist with knowing what the current crew is working with. I still hold out hope that once Neverwinter launches we might see some of our devs back. Time will tell. As far as being a "fanboy" I never considered myself one. I'm more than willing to point out flaws of the game and did so shortly after launch for quite a while. Since then I've noticed an ebb and flow to the size of the staff, amount of content, and dev interactions. I see this as a low point and am just waiting for the next wave. If that's your definition of "fanboy"...ok.

and too bad that manure wasn't real. I could use it on my lawn.

See, any time someone dares say "There's plenty of time, it's not like it will be over so soon" something goes and breaks. How long before it's taken down and never seen again?
The last event that got taken down for being broken wasn't just broken - it was breaking characters. It was taking 40s and turning them permanently and irrevocably into 1s. That's a tad more serious than "sometimes the rings don't acknowledge that you've passed them" - a problem which seems to have been repaired, BTW, judging by the number of people with multiple costume drops from the event already (remember, even the broken version only went live ten and a half hours ago).

Why are you looking for more problems than there really are?

They took servers down for maintenance the DAY of a "content release" for something that should have been fixed on PTS. It was on PTS less than 48 hours from what I gather.

There are MANY problems with that. Why you can't see them.. does remain quite a mystery.

I agree completely with this sentiment, which is why an event that excludes players based on which travel power they chose seems a bad idea. If it is going to take a year for permanent content to be added it is probably a bad idea to gate content in this fashion.

Honestly, how much more effort does it take to put a race's markers at ground level ?

Maybe it's because i was just making a prediction as to the outcome, as well as also adding points in why it sucks that any time they finally add something, it's only for certain people.

Maybe it's also because i'm just bitter how every time they do maintenance or an update every once in a blue moon, i can't even play without getting my hands on an up to date launcher exe file from someone else first because cryptic won't fix the damn launcher bugs and if they don't even fix that why would they fix anything else in need of fixing?

I shouldn't even be having to waste my time switching out an out of date file for the newest one to be play. it should be automatic, but it's not. If they're going to make it so the players have to do everything to get it working, why don't they just open the source for us to do their jobs for them since it's likely the only way they'll have more than 2 devs working on just events.

It's not that i'm looking for problems, it's just predicting what would likely happen following a history path they have with everything being broken.
