And it wasn't Cryptic.
Project Awakened was the name of the project,
as seen here.
Sadly, they didn't reach their goal.
Any way, seeing this made me think of the whole "foundry kickstarter" idea.
As you can see Project Awakened had 6,287 backers and managed raise only $338,498 falling short of their $500,000 goal.
I would be surprised if the CO community could pull together even 1000 backers and i suspect that adding foundry would cost at least $100,000. Food for thought.
Any way, Its sad to see that what has become my favorite video game sub genre struggle to find funding or an audience regardless of who the developer is.
What do you think is the cause of the lack of interest in these "create a hero/make your own story" type of games?

I don't think Kickstarter even accepts such projects, especially not from an MMO developer that has multiple games with regular income.
On the other hand, if Cryptic were to make a project like that and it got approved by Kickstarter, you'd also have potential negative media publicity.
Specifically, it would be seen as a form of blackmail if the project had a budget limitation.
Think about it like this:
"We run your favorite MMO and we want X amount of dollars to introduce new content. You're already giving us money, but we need this specific amount or there will be no new content."
In reality, Cryptic already has a "Kickstarter" of its own. The Z-Store.
15$ for a Kickstarter donation or 15$ in the Z-Store? What do you think will get noticed more by Perfect World? Increased game income or a nigh impossible Kickstarter push.
There is something we, as fans and players of this game could do. Just an idea.
Make an unofficial "kickstarter".
Set a date, make an official group statement and send it to Cryptic/PW.
On the arranged date or during a limited time, "donate" some money through the Z-Store.
It's a clear statement - we're willing to pay money to get new content/this content.
It has drawbacks of course. Unlike an official Kickstarter project, there is no money-back guarantee if we don't get the content.
All in all, it's a dumb idea. :P
But hey, just a thought. What CO really needs is something to get noticed by in Perfect Worlds' management.
Anyways, as we found out during the efforts to save CoH you can't kickstart an existing product.
Its a game where you design your own hero with a free form power system. How is that not like CO/COX. If you breeze through the comments on the web sight you can see some ex COX backers commenting as such.
The game also has tools to create your own content, how is that not like foundry?
PVP is starving without rewards
1. Please give us Daily PVP missions that reward Questionite.
2. Please give us an exchange rate between Acclaim and Recognition so that PVP has access to all "On Alert" PVE rewards.
Whoever you are, be that person one hundred percent. Don't compromise on your identity.
