Player Driven Events, What can WE do?

kenpojujitsu3kenpojujitsu3 Posts: 1,325 Arc User
So I was having a chat on these boards with Pion and he mentioned CO and marketing and advertising (more accurately a lack thereof). I slept thinking about some of that conversation and others, then read this this morning and started thinking. Stick with me on this please.
Meanwhile, the awesome scenes of gigantic player-driven events, like the Battle of Asakai, have drawn a lot of attention. In fact, Hilmar said these sorts of events were the game?s best advertisements

Now granted, this was not a planned event in that game but that doesn't mean that planned things can't do something positive. So what can we do as a playerbase? I'm not talking about costume contests and such that individual SGs get together and do amongst themselves. I'm talking about something bigger, something more all-inclusive across the game as a whole.

All-Stars, Red Academy, Ultimate Guardians, A.R.C., S.P.E.A.R., Wildcards, Silver Age Sentinels, Shards of Virtue, S.EC.R.E.T., etc. All of us banded together to do something?

Is there something(s) we all could do, make a video (or actually several) of and get out there to show off what we do in this game and why we continue to play it? Anyone with contacts to gaming blogs and outlets to help spread it if we get something(s) off the ground?

This is just an idea in my head and maybe a pipe dream but I'm asking for input from the people I've spent months to years playing, debating, RPing, arguing:smile:, etc. with. Think this is an idea that we could all get together, turn from an idea to a plan and do it? Let me know.

Note: If you don't like the game, chances are you've already posted this several times. Duly noted. If you don't think the game is currently in a state that warrants some player advertising, you've likely said this too. Duly noted. If you don't think it's the player's jobs to do this, I've heard that before too. Duly noted. And yes, Telepathy now. Duly noted and I agree.

Let's try to keep this positive, pertinent and productive.

Regards,

James

Definitely what we need. I see fan made videos from the STO players who post videos and really use the game to promote itself.

Start making the step to figure out how to record and edit our own videos and show that the players really support the game through a more visually appealing and interactive community.

    Ok, so here's my idea.

    1st, the inspiration:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1l8dfqFv1s

Ok, now that we're all up to speed. I saw we do this again but, obviously, differently and more relevant for a 1st project.

After running the Bleak Harbinger Alert on PTS it struck me that there is a decently sized story gap between this and the previous mission. Namely, the Lemurian Invasion on Millenium City. So, I think we should make one.

I think we should set up an ellaborate as possible big fight in MC(Live or PTS...probably Live so Froobs can help too) starting at the waterfront near Champs HQ and moving to Champs HQ where the alert starts. Something grandscale and with all kinda of neat editing and demorecord tricks.

If we're going to have this "MEGA-EVENT" then someone should advertise it....right?

    Opinions?

I like the idea of having people make Lemurian costumes and being the invaders, that could be alot of fun.

On top of it, why not make a podcast? That could be a fun way to build up the community. You can also use it to organize events as well.

I was honestly really hoping something like this would come to be when CoX was closing down and folks were talking about a "Welcome to CO" day, but sadly that never materialized.

Hopefully we (you) can do better this time around.

IMO what would be important is being all encompassing. Do the usual costume contests and whatnot, but also throw some RPG events in there, some PvP stuff etc.

    My suggestions would be:
    1) some kind of scavenger hunt - go to every zone, maybe use the ingame lore as clues to the next location?

    2) "Running of the Newbs" - level 1s have to make it through the tutorial and out to Area 51 as fast as possible in an all out race with no devices, vehicles, or powers at all including travel - first to bust a move on the air field wins. (there will be checkpoints)

    3) "Giant Monster Ranching" - a progressive and continuous monster hunting party.

    4) "Save the City" - an RP event; someone RPing an UNTIL member dispatches a team of champions to different locations to trigger and complete all the open missions in game. Ideally there will be a progressive story.

    5) "Tournament of Champions" - A tournament. Of champions. They will fight each other in refereed events. There will be rules nobody will like, like no devices, and no clearly OP builds that will be decided before hand. Every duel will be a team battle with one ref on each side monitoring their combatant for unfair unfairness.

    6) "Dance Dance Resurection" - A dance competition with zombies - combination last man standing dance contest with zombie costume contest, keep dancing until you just can't deal with it anymore and log off in frustration that there is actually someone more obsessive about something so trivial than you. Since there will likely be multiple left, by the end of the dancing (12 hour limit?) there will be a "best zombie costume" contest to decide the winner. If any zombie is seen not dancing, they lose, so contestants have to vigilant about their emoting. Some refs will zone in randomly to catch anyone not dancing (since it times out or something)

    7) "Shkspr (Abridged) in the Park" - a show of The Complete Works by heroes for heroes.

    8) "Chairpocalypse" - competition to destroy as many chairs as possible in 10 seconds. No AoEs.

    9) "The Not Iron Man Despite Similar Appearances" - an iron man circuit of running through every lair back to back. Successfully.

    10) "Any Of The Above In Non-Contest Form" - any of the above, but in non-contest form.

For media we could get avid videographizers to just film things and editors to edit them into things.

Or make a Champo's movie. A series of showcases for the individual systems or locations, like mods, vehicles, the tailor, etc. We could make a CO facebook fan page and post shiz up in tharr.

But... But... Think of the children! We must do what's best for society and our future generations.

    nvm.

How about a "Knock Knock" event. See who can knock a henchman the furthest. Points given for best tumble. ;) (I know most people love to send their for flying even if it does lower DPS)

I've been waiting for something like this too. Players from The Matrix Online made more than a few really cool demo vids and short stories, and as we have a bajillion metric tons more material too work with I'm sure it will be good.

    My 2 cents:

Treat it like a real movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry excited)

    1. Casting Call- post for potential participants. Have fun with it: ask the pvpers to be the stuntpersons. Ask the rp'ers for actors and story direction, etc etc.

    2. Training- get together and play to promote unit cohesion. Post times people are willing to queue up for Grav, Bash, etc etc etc. I'd love to be able to check the forums and know I can log in with the likelyhood something I wanna run will pop up.

    3. Editing- take your time. Listen to the people from 1.

Occasionally, the RP community's has run some epics: the Superior saga finale back in 2010 had several dozen participants, Oakster/MrBits/Gigagal's the "Darl Earth" finale in 2011 had close to 40, and I had about 30 people involved (including spectators) for the "Return of Vanguard" scenario and the Warmonger saga finale last year.

RP for large numbers tends to be (a) insane to GM; (b) confusing for those not deeply invested in the RP's lore; (c) risks people getting so lost in the shuffle so you're lucky if half the people are having fun. But for as long as epic remains epic, we'll keep working at finding a good way to run large scale RPs. :)

I clicked Kenpo's link and for a moment, I despaired.

The thread title coupled with the linked article put the Hulkageddon events first and foremost into my mind. *shudders*

I'm down for supporting player run events in CO. I can't say for sure that I'll participate as I had said at one point that I'd help with Tanker Tuesdays and haven't yet followed through on that for various reasons.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I'm in the process of trying to organize everything that has been suggested from various people and brainstorming some ideas of my own to fit in where/if possible. Trying to come up with some things that are about "us" and the "game". Specifically the things we enjoy about the game and the community that keeps us here (or for some of us, keeps us coming back). Keep tossing those ideas out, the more things to consider the better...until someone's brain goes on overload.

    BTW...anyone seen trailturtle?

How about an approach similar to how Marvel does its big story arcs? We put together one story that will take place at various locations, and clip it together in a larger movie? For example: "While the Lemurians were invading Millennium City, Group <Heroes> did its part by stopping the Bleak Ones from harnessing Kigatilik's power in Canada to spread the invasion". Kinda how the Avengers VS X-men thing spanned across various different series, focusing on a few localized stories that had an impact on the big events in some capacity.

This way, you'd bypass the needing and coordinating a ton of people at once, the lagfest and inevitable griefers, you wouldn't be limited by the "100 people per instance" and you'd pay homage to Champions' comic aesthetics.

In any case, I'm up for helping in whatever capacity I can.

We ran something small scale similar to what Sekimen sugested - it's what I created the S.E.C.R.E.T. RP Chat Channel for. My silver account toon posted alerts in the chat channel which the teams went off and completed various actions.

With a little help I'm sure I could engineer some RP action by getting alert to post into a channel and set heroes of to:
1/ find and escort a lost airman across canada (my silver account has an 'NPC' toon for this)
2/ deal with a destroid invasion, beastmen, kigatilik, mandragalore, helecarrier attack etc by hijacking the open missions, lairs and special alerts.
3/ team battle waves of brainwashed heroes in PvP
4/ race to 'defuse the bomb' by collecting the code from an NPC at the scene
5/ 'police' any grievers in channel by sending a team of to deal with them
6/ and post Themed costume Competitions in character - i.e. best undercover lemurian disguise, best anti-Harbinger armour suit, best underwater assault outfit.

Check the old S.E.C.R.E.T. events page for some of my old ideas.

This could be really cool. Have the leaders in various SG's get to gether and hammer out a story, then have them run it with their respective groups, then post their part here in the forums or make a web page for it.

I'm positive there are a few of us in the Overwatch Initiative who'd be down to help. I like this idea, and if you need warm bodies I'm sure most of us would be down to play.

I second pushing Tanker Tuesdays. Any weekly event that focuses on getting groups together to play should get a bit more love. I try to make it out any time I can, because it's a hoot. I feel like that's the kinda player driven event that the game needs.

Okay, so I know I haven't been the most active in-game or on the forums lately. However, I've still been busy, reading quite a bit of Marvel comics that is. SO, I really want to start up roleplaying in this game again, and this might be a good way of doing so. I personally think CORP should hear of this, working it into their canon will help make it more "official" so to speak. I could throw this link their way if they haven't seen it yet.

I like some of the fan movies done for The Secret World, my favorites being Hidden World and The (fake) Movie Trailer. I wouldn't mind seeing some more guild recruitment videos or even just some sort of music vid highlighting parts of the game. Not much of a video editor myself, though.

I know I can sucker the minions in from Conquer, if you'd like our help for anything.

Cool idea. I like that you guys are trying to think big. A sort of - Go Bold or Go Home - strategy. But might I suggest before you go REALLY big, that you collectively do just a few smaller things to see if you are really ready for the big show.

One is, let's ask Slapperfish how he made this vid. I know he was making a joke trailer for a joke hero but you've got to admit there's real quality here. His trailer's style might be a place to begin. Not for the silliness, but for the big feel it offers. As any trailer should, it offers a taste of what's to come if you're willing to buy a ticket. If you can create a quality trailer to pique folks attention it might get them hungry for more.

And does anyone remember how the movie Snakes on a Plane got made? A handful of dialog, spoken between scenes, but recorded for an outtake reel, was spliced together and played on a radio show, as if it were a real trailer, then some one in Hollywood heard the audio clip fake trailer and said, "We're making that movie!" What I'm saying here is try to think of some moment or moments of voiced dialog in this game that if spliced together in the right way could sound like a major, in game plot, is about to be perpetrated on our heroes, the city or the planet?

And lastly, there is this D&D PSA vid. Well, that , but a lot shorter. When thinking of our game Champions and PSAs, I think of the Tips that pop up for me during load screens. Some still make me laugh and one would make a great idea for a short, easy to make PSA: Watch out for Killer Robots! Come on, that one practically writes itself. One brawny looking hero in the fore ground offering that exact advice while several heroes in the background rescue citizen via bolts of electricity, arrows or giant fists. With a rainbow like tag, "The More You Glow." Or some such. And I'm sure you guys can think of many other tips that could be turned into even more and better Mill City PSAs. And while you're making a few PSAs, how about a weather report and/or A traffic report?

"Thanks Rob. No if you're headed home you don't want to be taking roads any where near Memorial Park. It's bumper to bumper thanks to today's Destroid Invasion. My advice is, if you live Downtown, take the interstate around Center City and use an off ram nearest your home. That's all for Live at Five Traffic. Back to you Rob."

    "Thanks Ryan. In other news..."

Again, the whole thing should have a line of non-moving cars just in front of some heroes saving trapped citizens. Or perhaps a car or truck smacking down on some Destroids just as the scene ends.

So these are just some ideas that I'm tossing out into the waters. If someone wants to scoop them up in a net and do something with them, well, as the rabbit said, Ickitty, Ackitty, Oock. It's yours.

Honestly, as far as I'm concerned, the best advertisement for CO is this board and threads just like this. The fact that you guys are even entertaining the pursuit of such a project just proves that there IS something here and that it's worth bringing that something to the attention of others.

I don't know how much I can actually do to help, probably nothing, but I do support these efforts. I've bookmarked this thread, so I will be reading it often and if I can offer nothing else, I will be cheer leading you guys on. In fact,

Three Cheers for James just for being the OP.

I generally just lurk whenever RP's going on, but would gladly do my part with any stunt doubles, civillians, clone minions anything anybody wants to fill up numbers for an event.

I agree we should try to mix it with the in-game events to make them seem more dramatic, as well as meaning you need less people, since the NPCs can fill numbers somewhat.

Outside of the regular events, I suggest a murder mystery investigation is done each couple of months. This is something I realised could be done a while back: When your character dies, other people can still click on your corpse and read your bio.
From this, a sort of 'put together the clues' roleplaying game could be developed, where, from clues in the corpse's bio, they can hunt down the killer, or even more elaborate arcs if you've got the people to do it.

Basically, we create our own little events using the game's mechanics, and, since it's manned by humans, it means it's dynamic, can change, and is always fresh.

We also need some really good video-ers. Something I've seen in other games is that when there's a lot of fanmade machinima being made of it, it gets a LOT of attention. We'v got some, like that The Owl origins video I've seen, and the Slapperfish's stuff, but nowhere near enough for the waters to start becoming rocking and rolling waves of attention and stuff. We need to document the events in videos, comics, etc, and make them much grander.

If you need people in a darker setting, there's a trick via the Day at the Mall Alert in which even the lowest levels can access post-crisis Vibora with little effort.

And that's as much as I can think of for advice and thought trains right now.

Id have more content to do and have much more of a replay value for the content already in the game if Elite mode wasnt built for pansies.

As for Player driven content, besides showing up to a semi-rigged costume contest or planning PvP tourneys/queueing/duels, aint much to really do.

Perhaps arrange a 10-man QUIZ? 10 questions about CO, 2g per answer.

Hmm...or...IF that is you can find the right people, someone could design a Champions Online theme'd DnD game. (DnD 3.5 ruleset 4 life)

I've seen several mentions of players asking to help as stunt doubles for civilians or villain minions. Has someone(s) created copies of citizens as costumes? If so, perhaps we could create a thread and begin posting a list of the citizen and minion files up for later use.

Like Leon here, they can be used for Secret Identities.

What ever happened to the Harlem Shake video for Champions Online?

Or why don't we make up our own?

    This!

Anything else is just a distillation of someone else meme. Let me repeat that in another way.

Champions Online needs it's OWN Meme!

Memes are best when they are natural an not forced. Do we already have one but just cannot see it because we do it everyday.

    What is Champions Online's Meme?

I don't know. It actually is a CO Meme, but it might be a little too in game for anyone beyond these boards to relate to it.

    Still...

WE NEED TO SHUT DOWN ALL THOSE BEACONS! THEY BROADCAST A HIGH-FREQUENCY SIGNAL WHICH DRIVES THE QULARR CRAZY!

Anyone who has been through the tutorial more than once probably does think of it as our meme. But can we build on it is a way that non-CO players can relate to?

Name some others repetitive lines / situations?

A little something I've been wanting to try.

    http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=212191

    What do you guys think?

This is a short term goal with one very easy to ask a lot of players to do. All you need to do is create one new hero and show up. All the same hero, of course. Someone does some screen caps, maybe a vid cap or two. Can it be done?

That could be fun. Been meaning to start up a Brigade character too, since the last one got deleted by me in a fit of being too lazy to just retcon undesired powers.

Just to keep everyone in the loop. Before moving forward with this I'm waiting to see the Ask Cryptic and how it's handled.

Just to keep everyone in the loop. Before moving forward with this I'm waiting to see the Ask Cryptic and how it's handled.

In light of the Ask Cryptic answers, I'm not spending the energy moving forward with this idea.

    Reasons:

    1) A lot of answers given were "we are planning to..." or "we are/will look at..." which pretty much confirms these things have not been worked on much if at all at this point. It's not being worked on, it's just in the planning stages of things intended to be worked on...possibly.

    2) The few things that were answered with a definite answer of "we will..." or "we're going to.." were all related to vehicles and lockboxes.

    3) The things not in the plans or that they aren't sure can fit into CO are things that are in my opinion things CO could benefit the most from (from a player standpoint, not a business standpoint). Nemesis system and alerts update? No plans for changes or updates. Foundry? They're not sure that it can work in this game...but it works in the other two sharing the same base code. Log out to character select screen? They'll look into the feasibility of it despite it being present in the **** game already but simply not enabled for player use. That last one just let me know exactly what I needed to know about the future of CO more than anything else.

In short, I think it'd be a waste of time at this point to do the things I had lined up or to even post up the things I'd already worked on.
