Is that what you actually say to persuade them Nepht?

    Hmm... Interesting...

I have an idea of an additional factor, and please don't be offended by me saying it: because these guys also know you're female.

Just so you know I'm not saying this with bias, I'm engaged to a woman who is a mild bit of a feminist herself (which I support), and I have run "experiments" before on other male players in shooters for fun just to see what would happen...

Left 4 Dead, play as Zoey, use a voice emulator to change my voice frequency higher while talking into the microphone like I'm a stereotypical Queens-gay (not overdoing it, talking about the necessary tone inflections that go into the modulator not the word usage). The real trick though is not being the helpless "dumb blonde", but rather impessing with some ****-kicking skills while pretending to be newbie to the game and ask politely if somebody can watch your back.

Wanna guess at the comparative reactions between the control and the experiment?

(reactions were almost universally consistent in any shooter game I tried)

Depends a lot on powers and ability. I find some characters are really good at clearing minions and surviving some minor agro, while others are really best focused on the big bad.

Ideally, everyone drops into their roles and the tank can keep an eye out for unwanted attention and grab agro when people get in over their heads.

Ideally everyone would play to their roles, yes. That's an experience & practice thing.

However your ideal only rarely happens when all things are equal -- the extreme DPS players (or extreme healers) will pull the agro away, and misused knocks or squishies charging in ahead of the tank will sometimes make it hard to impossible to group up the swarm effectively. It's typically NOT easy to be an effective tank, but you can learn how to be more effective.

The suggestion about fixing tanking in my signature below (not my idea btw) would fix that. You should read it.

Eh, I just gave up playing tanks. If I had folks I grouped with regularly ...

Of course, nowadays I just don't play. Sigh. (I pine for Foundry on CO. It's the one thing that would solidly win me back. I know it's not going to happen)
    Campaign: The Fenwick Cycle NWS-DKR9GB7KH

Wicks and Things: NW-DI4FMZRR4 : The Fenwick merchant family has lost a caravan! Can you help?

Beggar's Hollow: NW-DR6YG4J2L : Someone, or something, has stolen away many of the Fenwicks' children! Can you find out what happened to them?

Into the Fen Wood: NW-DL89DRG7B : Enter the heart of the forest. Can you discover the secret of the Fen Wood?

Erm so you are saying they play games with me because I am a girl? Erm do you actually read the forums Agent. My old MMO crew play with me because most of them are my actual real life buddies and have known me for a long time and knew me BEFORE I was a girl. We've been playing games together ever since the days of the NES all crammed into one of our rooms arguing over who is getting stuck with Luigi.

You may want to read the BEFORE I was a girl part a few times. Some people on the forums tend to be slow on the uptakes.

But Nepht shall help you. Heres a hint.

95% of alerts you do there will be idiots or cannon fodder; some will try to micromanage you and die because of stupid stuff. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to carry these ungrateful little peasants and their dead weight to the finish line. Occasionally there will be another human/good player/normal person to carry it with you.

    This message will self-destruct.

I just nominate this post for Post Of The Year. I know it is early in the year, but this so eloquently states the awesomeness that we all know and love called "Alerts" that it really is the only entry necessary in the POTY awards.

I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who ever WANTED to play Luigi. That jumping height was too good to pass up.

    *grumbles @ Nepht*

Fine... fine... I failed to interpret "lifetime" correctly and comprehend the message in its entirity. *Emperor's New Groove voice over* "Bad agent, bad!"

    *sigh*

Speaking of which, did YOU read the rest of the post AFTER the part you quoted? The experiments were very amusing in truth (as in we actually did better because teamwork was more cohesive).

Also I typically played Luigi too Shieldtower, until Yoshi came into existence. Something about that crazy dino doing it's frog-tongue thing to eat bad guys and then poop them out as eggs you can shoot is just so... hilarious, bizzare, and Japanese-awesome-craziness!

Yep... saw a discussion in Zone where people were saying "If you're melee, just take attacks that stack knock resistance, and don't knock anything before the three stacks are in place."

This is the part where the kids say "facepalm" or something, right?

Alerts blew my mind when I came back from a 2 year hiatus. I started playing them more when my girlfriend started playing and I felt like an old grandpa by the fireplace explaining how in my day, we'd go out into the world to do missions to level up. In Canada, up hill both ways.

There's a word for people who are clearly new & inexperienced yet act like they know it all... I believe that word is "noob". There are a lot of noobs on Zone chat.

I can only imagine... A lot has changed in 2 years... Kudos if you can convince her to play
