Gone Gold from Silver, and now I'm locked out of my Silver chars

Well, this is a doozy.

So Tuesday 18 December, I decided to take the plunge, and go Gold, no longer remaining freebie Silver scum (I jest, I jest, hyperbole) and going for broke, by making a L39 character Gold so I can just unlock a free retcon on them and a nifty new character slot for my efforts. So far, so good. I had a total of 4 characters to my name before I went gold, the other three characters remaining Silver and playable.

At least, until just recently, Wednesday 19 December. I had made a Gold Freeform character, which played just fine. But on wanting to switch on characters, I came across a rather disturbing discovery.

Note how the Play button has been greyed out.

I have effectively been locked out of playing three of my characters I do not intend to turn into Gold, what, with not being certain I can always play Gold indefinitely.

What exactly have I done wrong to have the game go bonkers over my characters? Weren't players able to play Gold and Silver characters just fine as a Gold member?

EDIT: And for the love of all things good and holy, at least tell me I can convert my standard-AT characters back from Gold to Silver again painlessly.

You need to convert your characters to Gold when you go Gold on the subscription. When you go back to silver you need to convert them back to play on that subscription. Converting lets you change power colors and effects inventory space. Say if you go back to Silver and convert your Gold AT into a Silver AT, anything in the extra inventory you got for free from being subscribed, is locked away from you until you either purchase or convert to Gold once again.

Bit backwards that you have to keep converting characters, but I'll take it.

As long as you don't switch the standard AT's on characters, and barring Freeform of course, can you indefinitely (read: freely) switch characters from Silver to Gold to Silver and so on?

First time is free. If you switch from archtype to gold, you wont' tbe able to switch
back to silver archtype for free. You'll pay the same as two character slots just to get to use
    your one character.

    Fixed that for you...

If you keep the character an Archetype, it is free to convert from Silver to Gold and back (as long as it's a free AT or one you own. You only have to pay to convert a character if you converted it to Freeform.

    Well thank heavens.

It's just a rather convoluted and unnecessary step, though. But eh, I'm not changing AT's or making everybody Freeform, so it's all gravy!

Yeah, it's stupid, but there's a reason for it. It's basically an "are you sure you're sure?" process since if you switch from Silver Behemoth to Gold Behemoth you get all them bags and slots and ****, but when you switch back to Silver Behemoth you lose em. It's basically a "remember, it's not just the AT/powers you're futzin with here..." but most people miss that and it's poorly spelled out.

At least that's what I'm given to understand, anyway.

Hum There is one thing i would like know also.
If i make a freeform gold character then when my sub is off, would i be able to convert to a silver AT for free later?

I'm having the same problem - went from Silver to Gold tonight. Where do I convert my existing characters in my account. I'm staring at my account and can't see where to do this. I can find all my Zen crap just fine.

Thanks for any help - I'm sure the answer is right if front of me

Hoover: You convert in-game. On the character select screen, there'll be a "Convert" button on the right side of the screen.
