Perfect World's resources

I'm not too convinced this game will EVER get much in the way of development resources, no matter how many players may have come in from CoH or how much they might be spending on subscriptions and store purchases.

The other day, I was curious to know just how big some of the well-known gaming companies are, so I searched online to discover their "market capitalization" (The total value of all publicly-traded stock shares).

Activision/Blizzard: $12.6 billion USD (WoW: still the 700-pound gorilla of MMOs)

Electronic Arts: $4.5 billion (only a 500-pound gorilla, hehe)

NCSoft: equivalent to $2.9 billion USD (converted from Korean Won), even after recent losses.

Valve: privately-held, but company equity is an estimated $2.5 billion.

And Perfect World? A paltry $498 million.

(Mind you, market cap and/or equity is hardly the only indicator of how large and/or prosperous a company is, but it's at least a start.)

So, if PWI is that much smaller than the others, but still has to support the operations and updating of over a dozen MMOs while pouring money into the development of NW, is it any wonder there's nothing left for Champions? :frown:

Considering that this game does make them money? Yes. It is surprising.

Being a share holder I think I can shed some light of this subject. Firstly we need to separate PWE and PW . The American PWE floats its shares on the stock market while the Chinese one doesnt.

The Chinese part is that larger parent company and PWE is just a publisher they created to translate and publish their games in the west and manage their western studios.

In China the game called Perfect World 2 ( we know this game as PWI ) is the big mmo there.

I still dont think PW and PWE combined come any ware near the size of NCsoft or EA but saying they started only a few years ago ( 8 to be exact ) I think their growth has been rather impressive. More info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_World_%28company%29 <
read the bit about Valve and PW being buddies XD

The fact that Valve see them as a credible business partner right after they laughed in the faces of Nexon and NCsoft speaks volumes.

But the question then, if they have the capital, is why aren't they allocating more than a skeleton crew to this game? Doesn't really make sense.

    It makes perfect sense.

If you had millions of dollars to invest and several options of how to go about doing so would you choose the one that seems likely to produce the least return for that investment or the one that seems likely to produce the most ?

The reality of the matter is that investment is made, generally speaking, based on perception of potential return on that investment. If investing a million dollars in CO would produce a return of 1.1 million dollars, but that same million invested into STO could be expected to return 1.2 million dollars...well the money goes to STO.

(please note that the specific numbers are completely made up for the purpose of demonstration)

I don't think that's what's happening though. Until they started ignoring CO, I wouldn't be surprised if it was making as much if not more money for them than STO.

Plus one "top secret" game currently under wraps:

    http://www.crypticstudios.com/in_development
We're very excited about what we're working on. Like Neverwinter, our Top Secret work represents our continued commitment to coughing out a new game every couple of years while bleeding out our older ones for everything they're worth and focusing entirely on the next new shiny rather than exploit the full potential of what we've got and continue to flesh out and grow our existing games. We can't wait to show you more!

    Paraphrased

I looked at that link you provided and this is the part that caught my eye.
In addition to developing Neverwinter and supporting both Champions Online: Free For All and Star Trek Online with new content, Cryptic Studios is working on at least one top secret project.

New content for CO? Where? I'd love to run new content. Did I somehow miss it?

    Oh...
    They meant that carrier defense.

    Exactly,

And when you take into account PW's 2011 annual report (pages 6-7 for the juicy, relevant details), the whole thing becomes even more depressing...
In order for our business strategy to succeed over time, we will need to continually develop, launch and operate new online games or license or acquire new games that are commercially successful. We will need to do this to both replace our existing online games as they reach the end of their useful economic lives, which we believe are typically three to five years for most of our online games, and to meet our growth strategy of operating a larger number of online games that grow our overall player base and increase our revenues.

Granted, this is a year old report and things are subject to change, but that should give us a general idea of PW's vision (or at least what they had a year ago) of how to run their games.

Link to page annual report here.

Jepp .. Vehicles and maybe even Lockboxes are "content" for them.

And i love how "excited" they always are. I think they would even write how excited they are
when they post that the game would be should down next week.

With SWG and CoH shutting down in a space of a year you know what if Cryptic just kept the lights on and didn't do much I'd be happy with that.

CoH was shut down because of bad decisions on the part of NCSoft but, Lucas is to blame for SWG. They refused to renew the license once TOR came out so, it was legally obligated to shut down.

Cool. I just wanted to make that distinction because I've encountered a lot of people that basically say they hate Sony now for shutting down SWG and don't seem to realize that they were legally obligated to thanks to LucasArts and didn't have a choice.

Agreed, totally wasn't SOE's fault from what was seen on the forums Sony tried to keep it open.

The fact that their choices during the time they were running the game made it easy for LucasArts to not give a flying **** about SWG doesn't win Sony any awards however.

The screwing of SWG (and it started years before the lack of the contract renewal) and its players was a joint effort by both idiotic companies.

If there had never been a COH there would never have been a CO.

Yea, the whole NGE thing was something LucasArts dropped on Sony last minute, hence the stupidly fast change just after the release of a new skill set class in SWG, that was completely deleted after the change.

LucasArts was responsible for NGE? I always thought that was just stupidity on the part of SoE.

From what I understand and have gathered from various sources, Sony was content with the game as it was, at least the developers for SWG were concerned. From what I understand, LucasArts called and said change it, Sony said we agree, and the developers got blind sided with a change that was practically required right on the heels of their big expansion and would completely undo everything they made.

The secret project is probably Lockboxes Online, where you play a young lockbox trainer who travels the world to tame new and exotic lockboxes. You can level up, allowing you to buy new and more expensive keys to unleash the potential of your lockboxes.. and dueling.. I mean comparing your lockboxes with other peoples' lockboxes.

    *sigh*
