Welcome to The Black Swan Project
In a world where we attempt to explain and rationalize day to day events, there are those that occur that are beyond our knowledge that have a vast impact on our lives. Nassim Taleb posited in 2007 that these rare moments, termed "Black Swan Events," have occurred many times in history and have had long lasting effects. The Black Swan Project seeks to prevent the negative consequences of these events from transpiring, exploit possible positive outcomes, respond to said events through research and planning, and guard the unknowing from any sinister patterns generated from these events. More simply stated, The Project works to protect the innocent from the uncontrollable forces that swirl around them. Our motto,
Perceptum ex Preteritus , Persevero in Tendo, Quod Instruo Pro Posterus, is direct and simple: "Learn from the past, Persevere in the Present, and Prepare for the Future"
The Black Swan Project
The community at large knows very little of The Black Swan Project. Its public face is one of a think tank, publishing articles on how to anticipate and react to improbable yet wide reaching occurrences known as Black Swan Events. The organization carries no official weight with any governments, agencies, organizations, businesses or military groups. It has no authority than any other civilian organization and is not affiliated with any political or religious ideology.
In truth the Black Swan Project takes action on preventing and/or minimizing potential negative effects of Black Swans Events, while attempting to encourage and protect possible positive outcomes. The group acts at a local and global level, anything from protecting a child who may one day discover an AIDS vaccine, to preventing an extra-dimensional incursion from the Qliphothic Realms.
The Project offers full membership after a probationary period. Project leaders review and examine carefully each applicant via a series of interviews designed to ensure a good fit with the goals of the project and other team members.
Our OOC Mission:
To support heroic RP and character development as individuals and as a group, with respect for each other as characters and players.
We expect our members to demonstrate:
- Respect of each other as players
- A willingness to have fun
- A willingness to propel and drive the creativity in others; encouraging others in their talents, offering constructive criticism and thoughts
- A willingness to communicate stories and characters to the group, proactively including the guild in RP, and starting RP when the opportunity presents itself
- Participation in forum, in-game, and chat role play
An OOC History of the Black Swan Project
When I first started playing CO, I had the good fortune to connect with a group of very talented role-players. We would spend hours RP-ing in chat and in game, and helped each other craft amazing stories. Unable to log into the game at the times needed to connect with our international community, we used Yaplet then an IRC channel to chat with each other and RP throughout the day. We would take any chance we could to interact with each other, in any vector available.
A little over two years ago, this group of elite RP-ers created the Black Swan Project. Its goal was to provide a loose framework for any number of character types and stories. The overall theme would remain heroic, but the group could support a variety of thematic archetypes. It's members included straight up superheroes in tights, fallen angels, ex-soldiers, an embodiment of the mythical Phoenix, a witch, Steampunk creations, and an ex-FBI profiler on the verge of a psychotic breakdown.
For a short while, the small group thrived. However, real world forces slowly drew members away, leaving the Black Swan Project fallow for a time. A reunion of the original team last summer and the RP it sparked led me to a decision. It was time to re-devote some energies towards restoring the BSP as a small group of talented RP-ers committed to helping each other develop characters and tell stories.
What you should know about the Black Swan Project before you apply.
We like to RP. Sometimes we RP out mundane activities. Other times we play out earth shaking heroics. If you've ever had to ask "Does anyone want to RP?" chances are we are the folks you want to meet. If your entrance into chat looks something like "Anita runs into the room, slamming the door behind her. She gasps as he struggles to find air for the words. 'They're after me,'" we are likely the group you've been hoping for. That's not to say we step all over each other's RP, but hopefully the example is enough to convey a point.
We're small, very small. We currently have three active members and three in probation. Right now, we are unable to maintain much of an in-game presence. Most of our RP occurs via the forums and in our IRC channel. I find this unlikely to change. I don't see the group getting larger than 10 ~ 15 people or the real life pressures that keep us from the game changing anytime soon. We would support anyone offering to help us build an in-game presence, but it's not something the leadership can do themselves at the moment.
We welcome most character concepts. The nature of the group is still heroic, but we believe that encompasses a wide variety of archetypes. The Black Swan Project can always fire those characters that cause more trouble than they are worth. We'll handle those conflicts IC or OOC as necessary.
We welcome mature, drama free players, who are able to keep a professional distance between virtual and real life.
We operate primarily in the Central US timezone. Someone is usually in the IRC channel and willing to RP or chat from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm on weekdays. Our in-game time varies, but we will start scheduling regular sessions in the coming weeks.
