The guys at
Massively wrote up an article today on
new homes for superhero MMORPG players, and we're proud to be on that list.
It's an honor every time a hero pulls on tights in Champions Online, and we look forward to continuing to provide your superhero home. Thanks for the shout-out, guys!
Comments
The unfortunate comments at the bottom from naysayers are not as helpful. I can give them some leeway as I don't think I would look favourably at other games if CO shut down as it is the game I favoured out of the current crop.

The comments at the bottom were fine as far as I'm concerned. Most of them are discussing all the alternatives listed, including other non-mmo alternatives. I see nothing wrong with pointing out the flaws in this game and others when trying to decide what alternative to jump onto.
That's reality that PR teams (and not just this, and not just for mmos, and not just for gaming in general) have to live with in this internet age where EVERY PR piece their product is mentioned in allows comments. Inevitably those comments will include both rosy comments and critiques (some valid and some not) of said product.
Let's just be glad that the article itself was favorable.
If there had never been a COH there would never have been a CO.
I didn't say all the comments were bad just the few naysayers and I also said I could understand why some of them could make comments like they did. I agree that allowing people to comment on articles is always opening you up for good and bad comments you will never make a game everybody likes. If they did we would all be playing that.

Maybe because STO is not a super hero mmorpg? I don't see the new blond* on the list either.
<Guild Wars 2>.
=^ _ ^= Kitty Lives!
Frankly the only City of Heroes players who would bother with Guild Wars 2 now are the ones who bought the game before Black Friday and especially those who bought and downloaded it digitally who can't now get their money back. I have heard of none who have bought the game after that point. And have even heard of some who bought the retail box who returned it to the game stores.
This is not to rag on Guild Wars 2 as a game or Arenanet, BTW. GW2 is a GOOD GAME and Arenanet are by all the signs as good a studio and enthusiastic about their game as Paragon Studios was about City of Heroes. I have no hatred for them and really feel sorry that they are caught in a bad place at the worst possible time. If they could somehow contrive to be bought by another company and get out from under the failing and shady business practices of NCSoft, I would do a personal 180 and buy their product in order to help ensure their survival. But as long as they are under NCSoft I cannot give them money because to do so is to also give money to NCSoft and I won't do that.
Frankly I'm enjoying watching NCSoft's stock continue it's slide down the hole. I find it quite telling that the upward trend that began just after they announced the closing of Paragon studios was STOPPED DEAD in it's tracks and started a more or less straight line downward almost LITERALLY the day after the Unity Rally with all the torchbearers in-game and the save City of Heroes efforts began.
NCsoft have NO IDEA of the whirlwind they are about to reap in terms of bad publicity. They think it's bad now, wait until November 30th passes and City of Heroes close down the servers for the last time, then the gloves of the former community will truly come off.
To paraphrase Mr. Stark from The Avengers: "If we can't protect Paragon City you can be damn certain we will AVENGE it!"
I do want to thank the Champions community for taking us in, though. CO may not be COH, but you've garnered yourselves some good publicity yourselves by being so welcoming, as evidenced by the Massively article, among others. True - there are always going to be some trolls and such in the comments. But trust me - more COH players appreciate the effort of CO to welcome them then you know.
(Also, TT, you can mistell to me any time. I seriously count that as one of my greatest CO moments thus far. :P)

In terms of the Paragon Market... it never seemed as blatantly gouging as the Z-Store appears to be. I dunno if that's in terms of the difference in exchange rates and value. Biggest example? Silver Freeform slot, the equivalent of $50, is constantly on the top tab of the Z-Store as a Featured Item.
I think the biggest expense for anything in the PM was for extra enhancement trays.

But Cox had the choice of any powers of the game for your character (freeform), or did you have to choice a primary and a secondary powerset ?
More expensive perhaps, but more liberty to create your character.
I personally believe, that if Cryptic decides to reduce the cost of the freeform purchase a little bit, it will definitely shut reviewers up about the game paying too much attention to it's store..
And you heard them! They mention that the game had a messed up battle system, fixed, but still with "scars".. Maybe it's a good start for Cryptic to prove them wrong.. Make them say that CO is the only decent superhero MMO out there eventually..
Shallow games that keep you as a "sidekick" of an all-powerful signature hero or force you to play someone existing, aren't worth mentioning if you ask me! I want my hero to has personality and depth..
In CoH, if you subscribed, you get ~12 character slots. If you dropped down to a Premium account, you get all of them locked and can only reopen 2 (plus any you happen have earned or bought). There's exceptions: non-veterans might not be able to unlock certain archetyped characters (controller, mastermind, epic heroes and villains) without buying them on the Market, but other than that, anything allowed by the basic game (or earned/purchased things) you can play without strings attached regardless if you're paying that $15 a month.
CO? Whole different ball game. You can only play characters created as your current account type, from what I understand. Subscribed people can play their Gold freeform and archetype characters, and Silvers can only play the basic archetypes unless they bought more or shelled out the money for a Silver Freeform slot. Not only that, but if you change your account, you have to convert your characters to be able to play them again, and sometimes it's a one way trip.
If I must have one complaint about CO, it's how convoluted the process surrounding this all sounds to me.
On the other hand, I have to echo again the thanks that the community here deserves for inviting us Cityfolk to come play in your house.

I just thought I would say it's your house to now so make yourself at home and I hope you have fun see you on the streets of Millenium City.

Conversion between Gold and Silver is free and unlimited, as William Jennings Bryan said it should be, provided only that the character is and remains of an AT available to your Silver account. For instance, if you create an Unleashed, a free AT, that character can be converted back and forth between Gold and Silver as often as you like, as long as he remains Unleashed. During the conversion process, you are given the option to change the AT (or, when upconverting to Gold, to go FF); however, this is only free the first time, so if there's any doubt about keeping your Gold account, it is inadvisable to accept this option.
I have tested this assumption with my own account. It's part of why I actually purchased the Inventor and Tempest ATs, and will purchase the Night Avenger once my account drops back to Silver in about a week (the Dork Knight is a lot of fun to play).
It should be further noted that if you have a Gold account, fill your slots up, and drop back to Silver, you can bring over all of your characters if you wish; beyond the first two, however, they occupy what can be thought of as a "virtual slot", and if you delete one, that slot simply disappears from your screen until you're down to as many slots as you have as Silver. If, like me, you're afflicted with altitis, it's best to make sure you convert no more characters to Silver than you have Silver slots available.

Not disagreeing with anything, but it just still seems an off point, whether by perceived design or the fact I'm just used to old ground. I'll get accustomed to it when time comes.
