This started happening yesterday. When I try running the launcher (Champions Online.exe), a Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate window pops up stating:
Trying to update the launcher.
Please be patient.
Tried connecting 1 time.
Then, after about ten seconds, Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate closes, Champions Online.exe (version 2012.5.11.1914) is renamed to Champions Online.exe.deleteme, and a new Champions Online.exe (2012.8.27.1938) is created and begins running.
Version 2012.8.27.1938 only seems to run in the background. No launcher window, no error messages, no indication it's doing anything but hogging memory.
I've tried others' launcher executables from older threads without success.
I hope there's a remedy that doesn't require a full reinstallation, as it doesn't seem to have worked for others.
Comments
I'm unable to run the launcher.
But first open Internet Explorer and clear the cache.
The launcher is apparently an IE window because you know IE is the most secure and
beloved browser in the world.
Also turn off JAVA in your browser, there is an exploit in the wild and no fix yet.
Also just to be sure makes sure GameClient.exe is not running.
If it is running when you run the launcher you won't be able to update and
you'll get stuck at some part of the process.
This I hadn't tried before; the launcher still mysteriously fails.
It was working fine before the most recent patch.
anyway, I thought I'd add the warning.
Clear that IE cache? Checked for GameClient.exe?
Yes and yes; no-go.
It is a mystery.
Update 1: Reinstalled the game; launcher still fails.
Update 2: Submitted a support ticket.
Update 3: Got an email response. This was part of it:
It was a link which led me to an error page:
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
I then replied via email and received this automated response:
Not only was my email address the correct one for my Perfect World account, but the link was missing from the message. Trouble within trouble.
Update 4: Started another thread: http://techsupport.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=3981
