Maybe it's time that Cryptic seperated the CO chat server from STO/NWN so they can rework the chat ban feature to prevent this from happening if that's the reason that they can't do any major rework or disable it in CO.

Frankly, what Cryptic needs to do is remove the 'auto-ban' feature immediately (as it's only used for griefing), and instead have the Report Spammer function report to, you know, a GM. And we'd need to get actual GMs INTO CO for that matter to do a MUCH needed job.

And sorry, Drannic, but I don't believe you. CO has no ingame GMs. It's just so obvious as time goes on.

They also can't break the chat server apart because the whole thing is interconnected as designed.

As I've said before, and I'll keep on saying - I refuse to interact with the community as a whole (in Zone) as I'm afraid of being chat banned. That's just messed up.

In that case, I insist that they give us a game-ban fuction that banned people from the game on top of the chat-ban function that works based on X number of chat-bans recieved and banned people for at least a week, if not permanetly. That way when people start getting banned from the game, it would be cuz people did something stupid in game, and not because the company was stupid enough to give us a tool that could be horribly abused in the first place.

I've fallen victim to this for talking to someone in local about how mods work, and saying hello to someone.

A staggering amount of these incidents happen to roleplayers. There are entire groups of players out there that just love to terrorize us 'for the lulz'. Even worse are the roleplayers who abuse it because 'you roleplayed a thing that they didn't like'. Yes, I've seen this and it's childish.

I don't see how this was ever even implemented as a game mechanic. If you don't like what someone is posting, use the ignore feature. If they say something so bad that you can't stand it, then by all means send in a ticket. (Personally, I wouldn't do this unless it was soliciting someone for child porn or making a legitimate threat, because I can control my emotions if I am offended).

Yeah, I get that. However, advocating such a tactic, even as a means of making a point, is also rife with potential for abuse. If I had faith that people on the internet would act responsibly, I wouldn't say this. Since I don't have such faith...

This is one feature that should never have been considered. Players should never have the ability to have this kind of impact on another players game. The report spam feature should only send a report of the incident to a gm. The GM then should take a look at each case and determine if it was indeed spam.

This may cause more work for the GMs, but other games have a similar feature to this that doesn't result in a chat ban. The feature in the other games only place the 'spammer' on the reporters ignore list.

You know, when I said I expected to be silenced again unfairly on the first page, I DIDN'T EXPECT IT TO BE RIGHT NOW. I wasn't even spamming, again. Here. I feel like sharing the ticket I sent. I'll be chatting again in 24 hours.

"Hi. Me again. I just got another 24 hour silence for spam when I was chatting normally. Sure, roleplaying can be annoying, but it ISN'T spam, and I seriously resent the constant abuse of the report spam system. As last time, I expect nothing to be done (You can't lift silences, after all), but I want to make my resentment and innocence clear. Your system is seriously broken. I (and several others) have posted on the forums about this issue, but nothing continues to be done. I'm a silver account, so you have no fear of losing money from me, but several gold members I've spoken to are discussing stopping subscription due to your broken system.

Anyway. I know there's nothing you personally can do about it, but I felt the need to vent my frustration."

I've decided to stop making ZEN purchases ever since it became apparent that they didn't care to address region-lock in any fashion whatsoever.

Their refusal to address the chat ban system and the fact that it is too easily exploited just reinforces my decision, among other factors.

The sad reality is that, as AngelofCaine has stated, the forums are just a vocal minority of the playerbase. It doesn't matter how dissatisfied any number of us are with PWE/Cryptic. Corporate doesn't care as long as the profits are coming in. They can live with the negative backlash if so. When they do face a drastic drop in sales then rest assured they will start doing something and start listening to the negative feedback. So yeah, hit them in the wallets where it really counts.

They just want an automated system that does the work for them--without having to think or actually determine whether an account reported for spamming has actually been used to spam.

Unfortunately, I'm on a LTS so they could care less if I stopped playing the game either--they already have my money. All I can do is not buy anything from the c-store over things like these--which I haven't done in months (though, if I did it would be with stipend so I suspect they wouldn't care either).

But still... *raises fist* "...Fight the POWAH!" *refuses to buy anything from the store*

You know, now that I think of it... I was wrong. I do buy things from the Z-store despite being silver, so they CAN lose money from me. Time to boycott.

The fact that I got silenced isn't so galling. It's the fact that I wasn't actually spamming, and I got silenced with NO input from a GM. From an automated system. And the people responsible for abusing the report spam button will face no negative repercussions.

It's almost as it Cryptic hasn't heard of the Greater Internet F***wad Theory, isn't it? They expect people to behave responsibly with the button we have no right having, despite the fact anonymity often brings out the very worst in people.

And as one person said... it can only take one person to get someone silenced for 24 hours. That kind of system is RIPE for abuse.

But of course, you all already know this. I mean, it's why we're all posting here.

Hey Cryptic, it's taking everything I have not to curse you out right now. I've been marked as a spammer. Again. This is 3 times.

If you've been prevented from speaking in chat due to epople reporting you as a spammer then you really need to reconsider how you're using the chat system.

People don't get chat banned multiple times becasue of a faulty system.

People get chat banned multiple times because they're spamming the chat with irrelevant crap.

Please read the rest of the thread. He announced a costume contest. ONCE. And was silenced. That doesn't sound like abuse to you?

In the case of my silence, it is understandable. I'm a roleplayer on a certain character, and he can become annoying. But being an annoying prick isn't 'spamming' and it doesn't mean you should get silenced for a whole day by an automated system, and give the GMs no ability to remove the silence when it was falsely given (which it often is). In fact, if I wanted, I could find random people and hit report spam until they got silenced. And it would work. The system is flawed, easily abusable, and should NOT be in the hands of the players. A GM should be in charge of silencing spammers, not other players who just hit it when someone says something they dislike. (People who hit report spam for Grond jokes, I'm looking at you! Though I agree. Grond Jokes suck.) Anonymity and lack of punishment for abusing the Report Spam button begs for people to misuse it.

Which is why most of us think it should go.

How about you consider others by educating yourself on the topic before firing off a barrage on the forums about an issue you cleary know nothing about?

I had not got a chance to talk publicly after signing on when I was hit with the ban. What happened was, I logged into the Powerhouse Theater next to some person whom I had ignored at some earlier time, (a last resort move in which someone is spamming a contest, or refuses to not speak obscenities) a friend, and 2 others, and started responding to mail and private tells I had recieved. Halfway through writing a letter-whamo, I can't talk.

I never spoke in local chat, I never spoke in zone chat, I never even got out of the freakin theater. My notion in the original post was bad joke. If you knew me, you'd know that I don't curse, I don't like people who do, and that I DQ contestants that participate in showing what little vocabulary they have in my CCs.

It is well known someone has been stalking the OP for the best part of a year.

But hey if your going to accuse people without proof so will I . Are YOU and your SG the ones stalking him? Because that can be the only reason you have for that BS remark.

Your degree of ignorance is staggering, and deserve to be slapped with a trout as a result... *slaps with a trout*

Its not up to you or anyone else to determine who gets to chat or not in any game for any reason--even if they're spewing obscenities or openly discussing objectionable topics in zone chat (that's what the ignore function is for). Cryptic games are the only games I know of in the entire industry that use such an automated system.

And we've been told before, by the devs and community reps, that we're NOT supposed to use the report spam function for ANYTHING other than reporting actual spam (i.e. goldsellers and such--people dealing in real money transactions).

Chat-banning someone because you personally don't like them is NOT an intended function of this system. They are supposed to apply ONLY to actual spammers. You (and the system) are WRONG.

But that would be responsible game moderation, and it would require GMs. And Cryptic wants neither of those things

They just want an automated system that does the work for them--without having to pay anything for it.

    Fixed that for you.

Seeing that arbitrary chat bans seem to be on the rise, maybe we should start an IRC channel so people can chat freely again. I'll gladly start one, as long as I know it will be used. For that matter, do we already have an existing IRC channel that we could use?

EDIT: Yep, there already appears to be a Champions Online IRC channel. Can't find a forum post about it though, maybe I'm overlooking it but searching "IRC channel" in the forum's search engine doesn't seem to give a topic about it. Here's the channel anyway.

    also:
i warned you about chat bans bro
    i told you dog

    IT KEEPS HAPPENING.

    1. If you've been prevented from speaking in chat due to epople reporting you as a spammer then you really need to reconsider how you're using the chat system.
    2. People don't get chat banned multiple times becasue of a faulty system.
    3. People get chat banned multiple times because they're spamming the chat with irrelevant crap.
    4. Try to consider others before firing off a barrage in chat.
    1. Not in CO you don't.
    2. Um, yes they do (in CO), that's what this is about
    3. Um, no they don't (see #2)
    4. It's not a "barrage" that's the problem, it's the system that allows a ban from a SINGLE chat

Were there any specific reason for that personal attack other than that your opinion differs from mine?

This is the very definition of irony.

A person complaining for perhaps the fourth thread regarding his own ability to speak in game would like to dictate to others what should not be said on the forums...

    I see helbjorn's up to his usual:wink:

    P.S. This is the very definition of irony;

    Definition of irony(noun)

    1. the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect:" Don't go overboard with the gratitude," he rejoined with heavy irony

    2. a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result: "the irony is that I thought he could help me": one of life's little ironies

    3. (also dramatic or tragic irony) a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character?s words or actions is clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.

From the Oxford Dictionary. Alannis Morrisette should have looked it up as well as helbjorn ;-P
