So Much Maintenance!

bdragon4cobdragon4co Posts: 121 Arc User
I understand that the PWE/Cryptic merger is still happening, but why so much down time?
Its starting to feel like everytime I try to play, the servers are down.

Downtime to add new content is not a bad thing IMO.

question: why is it that every single MMO i have played are online while they add new stuff but cryptic is the only MMO owner with constant downtimes when a new update is happening?

Probably for the same reason that every mmo Ive played has had downtime to add new content or maintenance.

Yougan, your bridge-dwelling tendencies are showing.

WoW's Tuesday maintenance has become such a byword, you can purchase T-shirts about it from CafePress.

This week in particular was more maintenance than usual. The infrastructure and normal CO maintenances didn't match up this week, and we had the second try at the maintenance.

This is definitely nonstandard, and we hope to reduce the total hours of downtime going forward.

A lot of maintenance for different parts of the server. They just all happened to be around the same days. At least it happens before the new stuff comes out rather than immediately after.

    Yeah thats a good one.

Part of why I quit WoW. Between diffrent things got so that Tues was my main time to play. Wasnt gonna keep paying when down time was always during my play time for the week.

Cant blame them. They gotta do what they gotta do.

OK. I come back and now there's new stuff? I'm glad, but Cryptic could've saved me the frustration if they'd let us know! Geez. I guess "New Content" is now considered maintenance.

It's actually ironic how true this is on multiple levels.

    >_> Name this magical mmo for I have played THEM ALL ( <---- obvious inflation of truth ) none can add content while the game is running. It is possible but the lag and rubberbanding that would occur with live patching is insane.

Cryptic tried something like that , heck the sometimes do "live patching" and it buggers frame rate.

For a big patch its more practical to do it with some downtime.

It's not an MMO, but SMNC actually has this feature. You still have to exit the program to download and apply the new patch, but the servers never actually go down and you can play right up until the point where they drop the patch, get off, install it, and then immediately go back to playing.

I'm not sure how they do this, as their game seems to work essentially the same way that League of Legends does, and League has usual, even lengthy, downtimes. If I were to guess based on observations, they work with some really modular setup that allows them to take small portions of their servers offline for update at a time. They probably keep "buffer" servers on the side, only or mostly used to offset the player load while they update, progressively updating more and more as the currently playing users switch over to the new build.

All this is known to me. BUT I still want this list of magical MMO's that do live patching when peeps play, well I want to see this epicness .

    LOOKSIE at wat was said.

Every single MMO he has played can add loads of content while people play. These GAMES (as he has played many that can do this) sound epic and MYTHICAL.

ERM calling BS on this one sorry I play all the NCSOFT games ALL the perfect world ones also most of the ones made by aerial . And I am pretty sure most of the peeps here have played them as well and we all know these games need downtime to patch . BY THE GADS MAN the last City of heroes patch was a pain.

    Yea, seriously wrong there.

Rusty Hearts. a PW game mind you. Was down for an entire day. Nearly 24 hours, for their Reborn expansion. And that was just this week.

And before that, it has been suffering with lag so epic, folks have been getting random roll backs. And could loose hours of play time without warning.

    Please try again.

I'm going to assume you don't actually play these games you speak of, as what you posted is demonstrably false.

    Fail Much?

    so you play guild wars?
if you do then you're the one failing here, that game never ever has a downtime with updates and they barely even need maintenance for their servers.
GW2 is the exact same, they update behind the screens and yes, you get a message about the game being updates.
in GW1 it just says that there is a new build, GW2 says that the game will close after 3 minutes to update the game.

...sigh, if only ppl think we then don't have this garbage arguments.

GW1 is a totally diferent thing cause it only has instances and no open world.

GW2 also gave us message to restart the client for patches, and i bet if they really have
things that have bigger affects on the world that they will have to down the servers
    for that.

Else .. A_ION or Lineage from NCSoft had maintenance times.

The same as Everquest, LotRO, A_oC, RoM, RIFT .. or whatever else MMO i've played.

I thought Guild Wars wasn't "really" an MMORPG? At least, that's how it's been pitched in some of the other threads in this forum...

In any event, GW itself is hardly "every other MMO on the market", and if it's "every other MMO you've ever played," I venture to suggest that your data sample is rather limited.

Guild Wars 1 isnt an MMO.

Lobby based RPG. Even arenanet doesnt think its an mmo.

Dont know why you brought up GW2 at all...Mean, lol, its had more down time over past few months than CO has had in its entire several years (guessing here...has CO had 24/7 down time for weeks at a time ?)
