Hi all
I've playing and partisipating on these forums since beta, and I've seen a lot comments etc over the years
I was thinking of starting a post that expresses what people actually from the state of the game do far
My reasons are that there are a lot of negative comments, so I felt it would be nice to see some positive ones instead

So here goes

I favourite things are
Costume customisation
Freeform powerbase
People on the whole who play CO and STO are very friendly and helpful
Teaming up with pre-mades
The storyline.. Reminds of other comic series
The various travel powers
The nightclubs and other places to visit
Vibora bay and lemuria
The various alerts
Nemesis system
Ok thats my current list
Supergroups
What's yours:biggrin:?

In a two words? "Customization creativity"

My favorite thing has to be that you can create almost any type of superhero or nemesis you can imagine, and new content to customize does come out routinely in this game. That was what Cryptic promised since City of Heroes and in large part they delivered on that promise. For a person who loves creating lore and designing unique, believable characters this was a wonderful thing for me to have in an MMO.

Much of the game's gameplay content has become hackneyed from too many hours of the same routine, but it should be noted there are some very original characters (particularly with the design of the villains) and I have very fond memories of certain campaigns, such as the Vibora Bay Apocalypse, Aftershock on Elite with a full team of friends who are all on Ventrilo together, the boss battles in Therakiel's Temple, Episode #2 in Whiteout (the creepy, getting mauled out of nowhere by Grond and then at a higher level with high-level friends hunting him down, and of course the epicness of the zombie takeover during Blood Moon. To many players experiencing this for the first time (and I'm please to see there are a lot of new players running around these days), you're in for a major treat. This game is, always has been, a gold mine of potential (which is why I've never truly understood why it keeps getting held back and cutting corners on content).

I should also mention that I initially disliked this game, the interface was cumbersome and messy for somebody like me who is used to a streamlined controls with First-Person-Shooter style games. If it weren't for friends insisting I just get through the tutorial, and out into the main area, I might have never given it the try it deserved. (although it should be noted the tutorial got improvements since I started playing)

Thankfully, I stuck with it until I got the controls how it worked for me, and since then I've gotten a great deal of fun out of this game, playing all my missions for my first/main character up to 40 with friends on Sector-Thirteen.com's Ventilo (friends who had been around since Champions was in beta that is). It has been very much worth the $300+ I spent on it, and I encourage anybody out there who is finding doing missions is boring, that you need to play with friends and particularly with a good voice chat channel (Teamspeak, Skype, Ventrilo, SteamChat, etc.). This game flourishes most when you can play it with a group, particularly a group of people who like to explore and not just try to rush through everything.

In short, this is a fun game with a lot of potential, still.

PS: You should always expect people trolling or making sarcastic remarks (i.e.: nepht's comment above) in any internet gaming community, and frankly they are part of what makes the community have the spice of life, I think their presence is occasionally needed to keep it real. That said, you should understand that they are the minority, in a forum population that is a minority piece of the game's player population. There are a lot of interesting players I have met in this game, and on the whole the community in this game are surprisingly more welcoming and creative than in other MMO's I've played. (if you want to see a community comprised mostly of morons with nothing better to do than harass others, go check out Call of Duty on XBox Live sometime, or EA's Battlefield Heroes community, seeing as the latter is a MMOFPS. ) In all serious though, I think it would be nice to actually answer the topic's question honestly, instead sarcastically.

I would like to see some positive comments as well. Unfortunately, most of the positive comments would be in regards to things that have been in the game since the start, or at least for the last year. There's little I can provide in terms of positive changes that have been implemented recently.

I do like Alerts, but they're not a replacement for real content. Since that is, at the moment, all they are, I cannot give them the full credit they deserve. They are a nice addition to the game, but in a desert of no content, the lozenge of Alerts is not a Glass of Water of real content.

I would agree with you. In specific, let's call that "environmental" or "explorational" content, since "content" is a pretty broad term and people will point out there have been a lot of patches with other kinds of content (stuff for the C-Store, err now the Z-Store, such as becomes, mods, catalysts, other things you can gamble your Zen on, etc.) A new archetype has come out too recently (The Invincible), finally giving us the looooong demanded/wanted updates to Power Armor.

Yes, the game needs to start working on new Adventure Packs (explorable campaign content with a plotline and epic drops that you'd have to buy), Comic Series (campaign content that's 100% free for all players), events (Why should Blood Moon be the only full-scale event?), and a Zone (anybody remember the release dates of the last three? Monster Island, Lemuria, and Vibora Bay?)

Of course, the first word to anyone's lips when listing favorite things here will be "customization". There is no game out there today that gives you the degree of customization of your character that CO does (well, Cryptic's other game, STO, comes close, but they do have to maintain Starfleet/KDF standards of dress, so...)

The gaming community here is exceptional, as well. Anybody who thinks we have too many trolls and dinks here really needs to go play WoW for a while. Team kicks, cold shoulders, typical response to a question is "L2P, n00b" or "QQ moar!" - this place is freaking Woodstock by comparison, man. Questions in zone chat are answered - and answered correctly better than 90% of the time!

The other thing I like best about this game is that we are heroes. Oh, you can say that you're really just an undercover villain trying to subvert the competition if you like - but the upshot is that you do heroic things, saving people, stopping bad guys, and cooperating with the other heroes. And there are no factions, the thing about other MMOs I always hated most. (Seriously, programmers of other games - are you that hard up for villain design and implementation that you have to let half of your players take the role??) Even the PvP here is either the traditional superhero punch-em-up that usually results from misunderstandings on first meeting (my favorite comics example being from the latest JLA reboot, when Hal Jordan, as a new Green Lantern, goes to try to arrest Superman as an illegal alien), or in terms of a form of public entertainment, not unlike Marvel's old Unlimited Class Wrestling League. In both cases, defeat means you surrender, not that somebody is dead.

I figure if I want strife, unending confrontations between groups that can never possibly come to any sort of understanding, and being forced into certain roles, I have reality for that. I play games to escape reality, not to translate it into another format. (Or, in the wise words of Marvin the Paranoid Android, "Making it up? Why would I want to make anything up? Life's bad enough as it is, without wanting to invent more of it.") In CO, I get to play superhero, like when I was a kid, only without the arguments about whether or not one person's powers can even touch another person. And the dress-up minigame in the tailor is fun, too. (Oh, don't give me that look - if you didn't like it, you wouldn't be out there grinding for new costume bits, would you?)

I'm mostly here for the community - and on the occasions I can actually get in game, because it's fun for me. I don't really try to spend a lot of time analyzing why something produces entertainment value these days, however - while I am prone to analyzing a great many things (often to ridiculous levels), figuring out anything in my personal emotional spectrum is generally not fun (because it's boring, and I can't really use it to springboard discussion which is significantly less boring).

Thus, I'm not really sure why the game is fun. But, I like it because of that fact, which is likely made up of a number of quantifiers that I could list (and inevitably I would forget something of varying importance).

A short list would be fun costumes, interesting mechanics, and build theory/implementation.

I started to play since FTP in 2011, i liked much the customization, then took a break.
Came back again a little before the Alerts Update, the possibility of buying CP with questionite made it even more enjoying. xD

Indeed as it has been chorused in this thread.
    Character customization
Hands down the best that its out there in the MMO market. I know others are more realistic (which its unfair to compare, since its a different art style) and certain body sliders could be really crazy and awesome (Yes I am looking at you APB hairstyles... I wish someone else did that).... but what defines CO character creator in my opinion, its the fact that the variety its sooooo huge that you won't see another player looking like you (unless you are using a generic concept or someone's cloning you =p)... it gives this MMO the feeling of uniqueness that I haven't found elsewhere.

Also Character Customization, goes beyond costumes... goes as well with power selection, which its just aaaaawesome (well if you are freeform =p).

I look the way I want from the start
Another point not many MMO's do. I hate looking like a peasant at the beginning, and then play hours and hours just to start looking good. While its not entirely true that you look the way you want from the start (you need costume unlocks and maybe some C-Store costumes) with your first character, it definitely shines with alts. Unlike DC Universe Online where you have to unlock everything as you progress... and its not account wide.... yeh not fun.

Its yet not another fantasy MMO
    Nuff said.

    Alerts
Believe it or not, I like em a lot. It brought massive group content into the game. And with this I mean, an easy way for players to play together, which is the blood of any MMO. Before there was only Lairs and Hero Games. Lairs take time to get a group together. Hero games... well their a different monster on their own. With Alerts you can just queue, smack some vills butt, all nice and quick, and you get to meet a lot of people this way. Definitely I would love to see this concept expanded to Lairs... so we can just queue to a Lair with a proper setup (3 dps, 1 tank, 1 heal) a la WoW (yup, their LFG tool its awesome).

    The casual feel
I hated and quit WoW for 2 reasons after 4 years. #1 I hated badly raiding... felt like a 2nd job. #2 I hated have to spec for a certain min/max build in order to be even invited to groups. I like playing the game my way, and I like to play the game, and not the game playing me. Champs Online gives just that, at the moment bosses haven't got to the point where you have to have certain builds to kill them. For instance I can log and kill Gravitar with most of my 40's with no issues at all, and I don't do min/max builds, I usually go for thematic builds, which I find more fun.

I like *not* being confined to one particular genre or style of character - I'm not forced to look like and play like every other elf or human, or dwarf out there. My character's appearance is decided by *me*, not by some random number generator that determines if I'll get that piece of gear w/ better stats but a look I may not like.

Yes, the game is lite on new content, (in terms of story arcs, comic series, trials, etc), but I have little trouble finding something to do.

If I had one complaint, it'd be issues w/ the UI that need attention - things like problems w/ targeting enemies that are in front of you, or not being able to resize or sort the inventory.

I also feel that, on some level, the devs really aren't utilizing the IP as well as they could - there's over a 100 books to draw from, and with the versatility of the costume creator, there shouldn't be any shortage of content to add to the game - just flip through the books, and even if you just used existing art, you could add many new comic series/trials/lairs...

The character creator rules, the combat's a lot more active-feeling than the alternatives, and the community isn't half-bad either.

NEEDS MOAR NON-ALERT CONTENT THOUGH. Or the Foundry. With the Foundry this would be the perfect game.

    Mine is simple...

I love the way the concept of Super Strength (Might) is shown in this game.

The animations, the knockbacks, the picking up and throwing.

This is literally the only reason I play this game.

Guess I am about as new to the game as it gets. Can't even use zone chat. Not really able to comment on too much yet, but one thing stands out to me. My first character feels like a superhero. Hes an AT, archer, and can one or two shot whole groups of minion types. Has to work at it to take out a serious threat, but thats they way it is in the comics. One panel to show the hordes of minions being trounced, then on to the real fight.

Wasn't even going to keep the character. Prefer melee normally but figured that ranged would be better for learning the game. Not sure now.

And the game is fun. Doing the same lame kill 12 of X is OK when the game play is fun, and the X aren't rats, wolves, or bears again.

I haven't played to many MMO's, but the character creator in this one shames the ones I have played. For me, that's a big part of making "the hero I want to be". I tried DCUO, and even though the travel powers and the cities are awesome, the character never flet that unique to me.

Here's what I like about this game:

    1. Character Customization in this game is INSANE! You know you have made a customization system when players can make pretty much any character from any other game. I know clones are bad and all, but hey, its a good sign when it comes to customization.

    2. Nemesis. Do I need to say anything else? I love being able to make my own villain to fight. I just wish I got to fight them more often.

    3. Swinging Travel Power. Its the most fun TP in the game.

Character customization and the battle system make me stay. I mean... I can actually BLOCK! Honestly, how many MMO's can you say that for? It's what makes me stay. Honestly, block is where its at! Also how tap/charge or maintain mechanics work in this game. In other games, you click the skill and wait, but not in Champs. It's really dynamic once you begin to compare it to others or at least from what I've seen. It's small stuff but it's what always makes me come back to Champs. I can sort of deal with the lack of customization in other games but the gameplay is always a bit more sour comparatively and makes me return whenever I try another game out for a bit.

The Customization of the game is AMAZING tho... can make anything you want. it's as simple as that and makes it stand out.

I say stuff and I say things, sometimes together but only when I'm feeling adventurous.

    I'm @blu8 in game! :D

Customization. Hands down the best I have seen in a superhero game, maybe even in all MMO's I have played. I enjoy the gameplay enough to keep me coming back and lastly the fact that the game is free is also the icing on the cake for me.

People may come and go, but if the game does improve (I think it will) this could be the F2P Superhero game that will drive the inner comicbook hero to their happy place. Time will tell though, because this game has been through a lot of revamping in recent history that much of the game remains stagnant. So here's hoping for the future.

For me its having missions all the way to level 40. No grinding needed, I hate grinding. The last game I played SWG and they only had missions up to around mid level and there was a huge gap until high level. Most games before that followed that formula. I havent played WOW yet so they may have A full mission load. Fantasy games don't seem as fun to me on MMO's as they do in PNP. I prefer Supers and SF for my online gaming. The other big thing I like is that you can easly solo this with every build you can think of. No need to be locked into a few Elite builds just to play the game. Learning how to build a solid character is easy, you don't have to be a elite gamer to figure it out. So thats what's kept me here for over 500 days. Thats A big deal for me, I usualy only play An MMO for 3 months tops before I get board with it.

Yeah, I'd like to see a more good, positive vibe in the feedback to the Cryptic.

    Things I like:
    • Toon Customization - You can be anything, anything at all.
    • Be a Furry - I like being a lion. I like that there are wolves and rabbits and all sorts of animal toons.
    • Open Powerset - I like mixing powers and trying new things.
    • Quirky, yet fun IP that doesn't take itself too serious - I'd also say it's relatable, but I have a weird life.
    • Alerts - I like these. I was always too shy to go looking for a team so the whole PUG style of alerts helped me get more into the game. I actually kinda like that they're not too heavy in story and drop you into the action.
    • Other Players - They are almost always helpful, colorful and creative! They do tend to whine, but that's only because they only want moar CO.
    • Nemesis - Anything that puts CO's strongest asset, the character editor, to use is always great. Hopefully someday we'll get a foundry like STO. :D
    • The prospect of things to come - There always seems to be something in the works! I'm really excited about aura slots, but others are really interested in vehicles. There always seems to be something around the corner.

Retro scifi costume set including floating brain. I love that this can be for heroes not just villains.

X-Box PC Controller, i can't play pure keyboard games for long, this makes the game far more fun for hours.

Coloured powers, Pink Lightning and Pink Electric Flight is AWESOME!

Character customisation, i have spent literally days just on costumes and alts having great fun. I've bought heaps of costume slots for alternate costumes and transformations and secret identities.

Nemesis, so brilliant so seriously brilliant.

Engaging missions and humour, with puns and npc remarks giving me real laugh-out-loud moments.

Custom Keybinds, i can have catchphrases on key powers? I can have a costume change with a catchphrase and an emote? This gives a whole extra level of characterisation and customisation and fun.

Great immersion, from npcs and enemies mentioning our heroes name to the greatness of people on the street running up and thanking you this all helps me feel like my character is a part of the game, making me feel so much a part of the experience rather than just playing a dull ordinary game.

Awesome environments, even if i have to run many of them on minimum graphics on my laptop.

Great people. I run into few trolls and instead i encounter a lot of friendly helpful people. The community helps make the game such a great experience.

For instance I can log and kill Gravitar with most of my 40's with no issues at all, and I don't do min/max builds, I usually go for thematic builds, which I find more fun

I know several people in this game who felt the same and also came from World of Warcrack. (intentional typo)

I certain hope they never do something so foolish as to force having a specific build to win, would totally ruin the point of freeform. And freeform is, and has always been, at the core of where this game is at it's best!

I strongly self-identify and agree with the bolded text in the above quote. ^_^ In short, me too.

This will sound weird, but I love furries in this game.

Careful, I'll remember this fact about you forever now.

    Also...

/me uses [Chimeral Potion of the Cat] and polymorphs

    Love me now? *purrr* :-3
I love the way the concept of Super Strength (Might) is shown in this game.

The animations, the knockbacks, the picking up and throwing.

This is literally the only reason I play this game.

Ouch and those got nerfed recently along with AoPM.

    *sigh*
