I've noticed that items on the AH will not show if they are slotted, which can make a good item appear weaker than it is since it might not have the stats from a mod you could put in there. What's more, that little indicator that it has a slot doesn't show up in other stores of any kind, and even won't show up if you equip the item: you must have it unequiped and in your inventory to even see that it's got a slot. So, I think it'd be a good idea to make items show up somewhere on your picture of the item or perhaps the mouse-over text that it has X number of slots.
IIRC, all the slotted gear have in the description a line that says something like "use ctrl-right click to modify this gear". But it is true that there is no way to see how many slots it has unless you have it in your inventory.
I think that the rule is that Green have one slot, Blue have two and Purple have 3, but I may be mistaken.

That may be for high levels or something, but even at level 31 I've still got plenty of green and blue gear, and only 1 piece actually has a slot. Being that I've got my science skill being trained up, I'd much rather have gear with slots, but I'm just not getting any.
The socket/slot indicators are currently empty circles. They should be solid if there's something slotted in there, and they can put a solid "bullet" next to the attributes that are in said slot...
Doesn't matter. This is something that should be clear in the interface.
More to the point, whether or not someone is selling something that has its slot already filled is something the interface should tell you, instead of having to memorize a set of item prefixes.

Generic upgrades that have slots are name specific.
