Hey - I played Champs a little bit a long time ago. But now I am thinking of coming back. What is the game like now? How is the community ? Is there still a good player population? Devs still adding stuff? I heard there is a revamp coming. Should I wait? ( I hate when I learn a system and then the Dev change everything just for the hell of it.)
Any good guilds still play? Anyone looking to help a new player out?

Depending upon how long ago it was you last played, a lot of improvements have been made. A lot of missions have been added and/or reworked. A lot of costume customization has been added. A lot of "simplification" revisions for new characters have also been added that may give you the impression a lot of the game has been trimmed.
How is the community ?
Shrinking recently. But the ones that are still there are decent enough. I've yet to see a question get ignored if asked a couple of times. People looking for team play have a harder time of it since there's nothing in the game to motivate you to do so. The annoying players seem to have moved on.
Devs still adding stuff?
Yes. Not as quickly as some would like, but it's been improving in recent months.

If you don't remember much of the old (current) system then I'd say wait a bit so you won't have to learn one just to go learn a second shortly after. If you do remember it, then give an AT a spin to familiarize yourself with the game play.
Any good guilds still play?
I've heard there are a few still active. But I only see the Marvel comics ripoff group running around. I guess you'll just have to ask about.
I would suggest waiting until after the revamp of the system is done.
The population is pretty low right not.
Any play time spent putting together a build or getting it geared will have to be redone from scratch after the the revamp.
There is fear that the revamp will bring in a pay to win model, so waiting to see if that is the case might not be a bad idea if such bothers you.
I have always found the community as a whole to be quite helpful. There just arent as many people around right now.
The devs have delayed or put on indefinite hiatus much of the content development in favor of revamping the game systems. There is no word on when exactly we will see new playable content of any significant sort (other than the Alerts, mostly described in very negative terms by testers, being tested as part of the revamp).
I would suggest, if you are interested in coming back at this time, that you do so with a free account. Try things out before spending any money.

that's too bad. there was huge jump when CO went F2P play. what happen to the numbers?

oh, that does not sounds good. I have been play STO and they are making a lot of changes that seem to rubbing me the wrong way. ($50 ships?!?) I guess they are going to bring that biz model over here. Too bad because when STO said they were going F2P, everyone say "it wont be too bad. They did a good job with Champs." and then the Lockboxes came....

That also sounds like STO. it sounds like they are not going to make anymore "story" content in STO anymore - which everyone wants. And just add more events - which after you have played them a few times become mind numbing. I mean how many times can you blow up the same ship from the Mirror Emipire!?!?

Well i have a LTS... so i have tons of C-point built up. But i have no idea what to spend them on.
thanks for the input. i may roll a AT just to see what is going on.... but if there is no one playing.. will CO last? should i jump over to DCUO??? (I know best not to ask on a CO forum.)

Pop's low at the moment largely because until the overhaul there's not much reason to play on the Live server. But it should spike a bit after the major patch.
If you are looking for things to buy my personal recommendations are:

All the tights packs
Retro Sci Fi
Golden Age
Pulp
Heroic Power Flight
Phoenix Flight
A hideout of some sort
Do with that what you will.
some of thoes are cool. i was going to also go with the jetpacks. but i can't tell if they are a constume or a travel powers. I also like that the store here does not seem to be selling power. there is tons of stuff to have without buying from the store. for some odd reason, that makes me WANT to buy something "cool". is that going to change? STO is starting to add the "best" ships only in the c-store.
Also buy account wide costume slots, then.. best deal in the C-store.
New system changes include only one primary super stat and then two secondary stats, with new Itemization allowing any stat sets to function together fairly well.
Also less gear worn, and less "trash" gear, with a new crafting system, and a new Specialization trees system all characters have access too that gives a new layer of power build and character customization other than gear and stats.
These changes could turn out to be the best thing to ever happen to CO. Don't let my skepticism dissuade you from coming back and checking them out for yourself (should go live 28-30th of this month).
As to where have all of the people gone ?
Very little playable content addition combined with telling everyone that content development has been put on hiatus. Little to do at max level and a lack of real alternate leveling paths.
The game's current implementation is not designed to keep paying customers playing, and teh FTP matrix ensures that Silver characters are pretty gimped and somewhat lacking in customization compared to the competition.
