The content previously here doesn't matter anymore; you used to need a specially constructed bind to prevent duel requests from being directed your way. Now, all you need to do is go into the "social" screen, select "privacy" options, and then click "whitelist duels" to prevent any further duel requests for that character. If you change your mind, you can just click "whitelist duels" again to uncheck that option, and you'll receive PvP invites once again.
Awesome change, glad it happened.
Now, the last challenge is to make players more aware of this choice early in their time in the game so everybody can have the kind of gaming experience they enjoy (ie: open to random PvP invites, or not, on a character-by-character basis).
On this subject, are whitelist commands just as clunky as before, requiring players to either learn binds or to re-select them every time a character zones?
No .. it has been fixed and they stay now selected

This seemingly small thing is wonderful news, from my perspective. Thank you.
It was very frustrating to see my wife being harassed by griefers with duel spam when she was still in the early stages of learning the game. She had no idea of what to do, and I'll bet that's happened to a very large number of newer players.
If the devs would make a "whitelist" commands video for newer players, they'd probably keep more of them around; dealing with griefers might be a leading cause of newer players giving up and finding something else to do.
I dislike other players being able to put a "cage" around my characters that limit their movement
While there is a visible boundary around the artillery shell. There is no cage, and nothing preventing anyone from ignoring it and walking away.
Truth be told, i find it more entertaining to use it against the hyper active trigger happy spammers. They cant offer another duel until the previous one times out, or you decline. (and I see no reason to help them by speeding things up). Most simply don't have the patience to wait for it to happen on its own. In the end, it forces them to run off.....therefore leaving me alone. Or wait for it to time out naturally. That alone is often enough to prevent them from offering again.

Yeah, my personal response to random duels (on a character I've forgotten to use whitelist on) is "/e afk_sit," and it works like a charm.
The "old" way of preventing PvP invites through binds is no longer needed, with persistent "whitelist" commands, and so there isn't really any point in providing that information anymore.
I like that we have a choice to opt out entirely and I like that better than bothering others, in response to being bothered. To each their own.

There is, go into the social window (default is 'O' to bring it up) and you'll see a scroll down list at the bottom, choose whitelist duels.
Oh, hells yeah! Thanks.

It's an annoying combo
