The Minimap's Gone Square! D:

So, being one of the first people to log on this morning after the patch, the new patch not only brought us a new costume set, but now the minimap has gone from the conventional circle shape to a square with all the icons crammed in there! O_O

To be honest, the new minimap is sort of obscuring my view, and furthermore, it can't be sized down on the custom UI interface. :C

Also, does this mean our agro radius is a square shape too? o_O

Figured I'd start this thread off in search of answers before everyone else starts seperate posts and complaining over a simple shape change.

Anywho, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Circlemap was fine as was.

Lol... yeah you can resize it... but only to make it bigger! haha, theres no way to make it smaller... though I guess ill get used to it with time, but an option in the UI to switch between classic and this one would be nice.

Also, FYI, if you click on the gear button on the bottom right of the mini-map, you can click an option to turn off all the buttons on the sides. Looks SO much better not cluttered.

Just logged and and I am not a fan of the new minimap at all :( It's too big and...it's...SQUARE.

I like circle minimaps, can we get an option to use the "classic" version please? I'm very fussy with my HUD thanks.

My guess would be that they squared up the mini map to to give more perimeter surface for buttons...

As a point and click player, I'm ok with that; the more shortcuts the better. I can get used to it...

You can shrink the size of the new mini-map via the interface scale. Which is fine if you don't mind shrinking your powers tray and inventory as well.

That's the thing, my interface is as small as I can make it and still see what icon is what (it's still big compared to how small it can go though), and the make takes too much of the screen. Plus the orange/golden border actually detracts from the rest of the screen.

I'm glad they gave the options to get rid of the buttons. Too big and provides limited value for the screen real estate it's taking up. Maybe if you made the compass font smaller with a greyer background and reverted back to the circle look (with the hide button option available) and also skinnied down and/or recoloured the border...

I hate it and see no reason for the change. There are other things that could be improved and this new HUGE mini map was not one of them. Its in my way and I need to see what I am doing. Please make an option to set it to the older version so we can all be happy.

Internally we just added the ability to scale down the mini-map down to 50% of its normal size (which is incredibly tiny). You should see this change go Live soon (tm).

And on that note: We appreciate your feedback greatly (hey, we're gamers too) and to be fair there has been quite a lot of feedback internally and externally since release in regards to the mini-map. We love to read feedback from you guys but being negative and going as far as insulting people because you don't like a change is very detrimental to the development of the game.

You know, it always puzzles me how people don't know the basic function of the f12 key. You can actually scale the mini map now, just hit f12 and grab one of the edges in the UI edit screen and you can make it as large or as small as you like. I generally adjust the size and position of a lot of the UI this way.

Well yes.. but as it is right now, you can't reduce the size, just make it bigger its the only option.

Personally as a developer myself, I understand all of this resistance to change. I am finding it odd myself at this moment, but I am sure ill get used to it. Though as a good options for users to start adapting to changes, would be to offer the option to opt in or out to the new design.

Yeah been suggested a bunch of times already , as has the fact that certain resolutions do not allow this .

As posted in a similar thread, this might provide a decent read.

I'm sure that if the map started from a square shape and was replaced with an oval, there'd be an equal amount of complaints from dem rowdy forumgoers. Cold feet from the sudden change aside, the map itself is fairly well-polished and certainly isn't going to be detrimental to your every day gameplay. It's something that we'll all forget about within a month.

    Agreed.

    Bring back the circle, please.

The ability to hide the buttons is really cool, but the square is ugly, obtrusive, and it matches nothing. Even scaling it won't help that.

If we had the option to use the square map or the circle, that would be great. Then everybody wins.

so many complaints, and nobody notices the new quick-access button the new maps has for the crime computer/leave map function, the hideouts, and other stuff?

Anyone thought maybe that's why it was changed - room to add new functions?

Not a fan of the new mini-map for a few reasons:

    - Size: The added corners for the new buttons bloat the map and cover valuable fighting space in the window. In addition to this, they leave the left-hand side of the screen empty and much more streamline. If I scale the map down, it will scale everything else, rendering it mostly unreadable.

    - Shape: You always save space by cutting corners; prior to this change, the upper right-hand corner could be clicked to minimize the game without accidentally hitting the change instance button.

    - Clutter: There are too many buttons there (even if you can hide them, there are some I will never use and some I will use all the time). It was very simple to hit 'c' for character information, click the power spaces for the powers window, or go through the drop-downs for things like the crime computer. Putting separate buttons for lesser-used items like that just takes up space I could be using to locate an enemy shooting at me from the upper right of my screen.

I feel the added buttons are a waste of space and a doubling of functions to access the same information that was already available in the game.

An option to switch between round and square would suit a lot of people as the issue isn't just form, but function as well. Please consider.

On lower resolutions it is just plain too darn big (1280x1024). Very distracting color scheme as well.

Now if we had not only the option of square or round (I still prefer round), but the ability to put what buttons we wanted on it......

....I am willing to be open about it. Let me see what it looks like on my 12" amber monitor.......

    ....{BOOM! spark,sizzle,smoke}....

    ....o.k. definitely prefer the round.....

Yeah, I'm quite perplexed by the decision to go from a smaller, more efficient, less intrusive model to a bigger, clunkier, bulkier eyesore. It's like evolving backwards and reverting to a much earlier, less streamlined version that never was.

Too big? It's a 99x99 pixel difference AND you'll soon be able to make it smaller.
Too cluttered? You can hide all the buttons. You couldn't on the round one.
Too ugly? A matter of taste.
Too square? Another matter of preference.

Because you don't use it doesn't mean someone else doesn't...
I do appreciate not wasting 10 seconds of menu browsing just to exit an instance...
(Yes, there're buttons I'll never use, but that's fine too)

    Agreed for switching option though.

psssst, Rockety, the image is a bit small to read the fine print (being a mole, I had to squint hard XD).
    Else, nicely nailed.
Though I must say, I would have liked the color scheme respected: old one was blue, and it looked ok.

I think we see the map better (no loss just to make it round), I enjoy the ability to hide buttons, and yay for the faster access to the "Exit map" button.

This was the first change I noticed after logging in, right before taking some noob to fight Poe in his new duds.
I like the new map, its not problem at all.

Only ever look up in the corner for the map, so the option to turn off icons is great.
    Never used them.

Was wondering why the game was so empty today.
Guess everyone was in this thread crying over a mini-map.
Should include tissues in the tailor for the next patch, keep things tidy.

I prefer squares. But then, when I'm not playing Champions, I'm plaing Minecraft, with Rei's Minimap turned onto the 'square' option, which keeps the north-south-west etc directions the same, unlike that map's circle option, which turns as you turn. So yeah, for me at least, this feels a bit more natural than a circle that doesn't turn while you turn.
... uh... that made sense, right?

Agreed. I have an older monitor, but like the higher resolution just because it unclutters the screen. The new square mini-map is far less intrusive than the default chat box, and the added buttons save me from wasting time looking through menus. I know I'm in the minority, but I like it.

Now if we can just set a default camera distance so I can stop staring at my hero's shoulder blades every time I change zones. I'm wearing out the "End" button on my keyboard.

Nah .. they must give every UI piece a different color. The problem of the map is simply that the color not fits
to the rest. I all is lime green we could maybe get used to it.
