I was born to a middle class family in Detroit. My mother was a dental hygienist, and my father... I never really knew my father. My mother sold herself and later, a seven year old me to VIPER for "medical testing." The next three years were a drug induced blur, but my mother and I made it. That's when the headaches started.
But, I'm getting ahead of myself. They call me The Greatness Man. I have dedicated my power to defend the people of Millennium City, our new home, but not everyone starts off at the top... and in my case you have to stop from the very bottom. My mother died when I was 14, leaving me to fend for myself. I did the only thing I could to survive; I joined the New Purple Gang.
At this point, I was into a lot of drugs, anything to kill the pain, you know? It was in the middle of a fight with a Champion that I unleashed all that mental energy in a fit of desperation. Have you ever felt relief? I mean, not knowing if youre going to make it to the bathroom or not, but making it just in time. An odd metaphor, I'll admit but it's the best I can to describe it. It was almost... Orgasmic.
Needless to say, 4 years of stock piled mental energy ended the fight. And my "friends" treated me like a king! But with my sudden clarity, and drug free release, I just didn't feel right hurting these other people. I mean, they were being fed upon by these goons who, at their core, believed that is what they were there for. I did my best to limit the damage they caused, but I didn't truly know how to focus my gift.
When I was 16, the gang had just infiltrated a warehouse on the west side when what looked like a VIPER Elite started systematically subduing each of us one at a time. Our lead Earner had taken an opportunity to knock down the VIPER, and thats when I noticed, he wasn't VIPER, but a Champion.
I used my power to knock the Earner away with an adjacent crate, knocking him out. The Champion arrested us and I was brought into custody. I was punished for my former actions, but because I was yet an adult, I was sent to a Youth Corrections for Meta-Humans.
I spent three weeks in my new home without issue. I had broken the law, and I was willing to pay my debt. But, I was released into the custody of an unknown male, and taken to a warehouse. It was here I met my new warden, the "VIPER Elite" from the job, the Champion who arrested me. He saw potential in me, for a force for good. He gave me a choice. Train with him, or go back to Corrections.
My stay at corrections became a fantasy land of wonderment compared those nights after training. I found muscles I didn't even know exist, but it all paid off the day I dove into the air to avoid a hail of rubber bullets. Flight gave me a new reason to continue, the first real sign my training was working. Even to this day, I try to touch the ground as little as possible.
With each passing week, I learned more and more. From assault tactics to hand to hand combat. On my 18th birthday, I "graduated" from training. My mentor finally revealed his name to me, Bullet Time. He told me that I needed an identity, so that I can patrol the streets with him. I wasn't sure what to do, or what to choose. Is that all you needed to be a Champion? A mask and a gimmick?
I spent a week trying to come up with something. Hours wasted with concept art, and pads of paper full of crossed out "Hero Names." It was then I remembered something my mom said when were in VIPER's lab. "It's okay, everything is going to be okay. They are going to unlock your potential for greatness." and "Kid Greatness" was born.
I became Bullet Time's sidekick, using my ability to watch his back, and repay my debt to society. When I was 21, I started to patrol by myself. With the 3 years of experience, I was able to hold my own. But "Kid Greatness" wasn't giving me the respect I was hoping for. After saving a guy from some of the Cobra thugs in the West Side, he said "That's Kid Greatness, youre the man!" and it was then it hit me, I was the man. The Greatness Man!
