So I'm rather happy with the changes to a lot of gear allowing for more glowing (those shoulders still need some loving), but I simply cannot decide whether or not the toon looks better with or without a cape. Suggestions would be highly welcome.

Well from a concept standpoint, why would he have or not have a cape. Is he a robot or a guy in a suit? What use would either have with a cape? Does it work as a solar collector? It is just cool? Would it get sucked into a jet engine if he was near an airport?

I know not everyone builds on concepts, but I find capes to have more of an ego boost effect than a practical one. People just feel psychologically mightier with a cape due to certain super hero's using them. However what use would a machine have for one? I like the less is more way of making outfits, if I can't figure out why a character needs something that looks cool, then he doesn't need it.

I'm always a no-cape sort of guy... I fall into the Marvel/Incredibles line of thinking about capes, as a general rule.

My vote, then, is no cape :)

i agree. no cape. i prefer no capes on my characters because I like to see mycharacters while playing as them. the cape just hides most of their look.

I like capes for certain functions but generally I am a no cape type of guy I think.

I have a cape on my Royal Guard costume for a Halo homage character. It look great.

The finest example of why capes are bad is what happens to Dollar Bill in the Watchmen, and by that I mean it got caught in a revolving door and he was gunned down.

Take the Nite Owl ( the original Hollis Mason) approach and be safe!

I just saw the Incredibles the other night while playing, and can't help but think of the references as to why heroes shouldn't wear capes. Getting them stuck on manholes, stuck to missiles, caught in doors, sucked into a vortex, sucked into a jet engine...

    "Capes are so out!"

There are many reasons to have capes:

    They look good.
They make superspeeed look tolerable. (this is a huge one btw)
They gets around the whole "but I don't want to look at a dudes butt while a play" mentality.

Anyone who is saying "but capes get you killed!" is forgetting that only happens in deconstructions. Which conveniently ignore the fact the same kinds of things would happen to all the trench coats everyone is using.

I'd skip the cape on this guy as well, as he definitely has a more "techie-robot" thing going on.

That bein' said, I think a tech-backpack of some sort might look good.

When I have a high-tech guy who feels like he needs something on his back, I always go for the duel claws, the triple fin thingie (forgot the name XD) or the like.

by the way, he looks really cool! the face seems kinda out of place, but It's still awesome :D

Personally, I go with capes if they suit the concept. Otherwise no. As to safety, I assume they are like the ties bouncers wear, clip ons :p So my main toon, a modern day knight who dreams of the medieval ages, wears one, as do 6 of my 16 alts. Some are magic users who suit it, some are Golden Age, which demand it :p and only one doesn't need a cape, Brainhertz, but it looked right. In your case, i would say no, or at least go the techno cape look.

I agree with what you are saying. Partially I give some of my characters capes just because I've always liked the look of them. Like my main character Lonestar ((see my avatar)) he wears a cape..because to me he looks better with one than he does with out one. My character Glorious wears a cape to complete his armor look..he sees himself as Heaven's champion so a cape just makes sense..plus most higher ranked Knights wore capes to display their rank and status. And my characters Nightwolf and Shadow Hawk wear capes because, like Batman, their capes serve a function for them when in combat. Sorry felt the need to voice that. Anywho getting back to the OP's question...I would first ask..does the cape serve some sort of purpose for the character other than just looking cool?

Every superhero should have at least one caped costume. Because capes are cool, and ALWAYS in.

And if you are afraid to get stuck in something, make sure that your cape comes with a quick-release mechanism... you can always pick it up later ;)

That said, my general rule is: if I'm wearing spandex, I'm wearing a cape. If I'm wearing armor, no cape.

The OP's character, however, looks sad and spindly without the cape.

I only like capes for mystic characters (they help with intimidation, awe and all that stuff). Otherwise, they don't seem very useful/practical for crimefighting.

Capes are good for some powers but would get in the way with others. Ever see a cartoon about a hero starting to run off and his cape gets stuck in a door or a hero jumoing and not getting anywhere because he was standing on his cape. either one could choke the hero before the battle ever started.
