Playing with Controller/Keypad instead of the keyboard

I play Champions with my older version of Belkin Nostromo n52 (see: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=164714)
I used the same controller pad to play City of Heroes once upon a time too. It was fine then; in fact, it was great using the n52 instead of the keyboard. City of Heroes recognised it as a 'Controller'. So the thing works seamlessly with the game as soon as I bug it in (well, of course, I did personalise the configuration a bit but nothing major).
But I am having problem using the controller pad with Champions. It just does not seem to work properly with the game. First up, the directional keys: the Chamions just does not recognise the directional keys from a controller pad. So I have the pad reconfiged as using WASD to move about. The result was not idea but it works (just about and I cannot move diagonally). Then when I config a key, say Alt-1, it only fires the 1 but not with the Alt holding down before it. Likewise with Alt-2 to Alt-5, Ctrl-1 to Ctrl-5. It never happened like this in City of Heroes and Warhammer Online, which I also played for a while.
Does anyone else having problem play Champions with a controller pad? Help...
