Insights? Because it seems at level 200+ most of the drops I'm lucky if they give 0/5 or 1/5. I need about 10-20 items before the bar even moves decently. Was this intentional with the patch?
The benefit to 5/5 research is a chance at getting discoveries (Insight, Ephiphany, Profundity) for your current tier (T1: 1-100, T2: 101-200, T3: 201-300, T4: 301-400). They will allow you to buy certain blueprints.
Ok I thought that Insights might have something to do with it, thanks! I'll just keep hoarding stuff until I can get 5/5 instead of wasting on 2's and 3's.
Note that doing research of 1/5-4/5 has a chance of netting you discoveries of a lower tier than your current. Again, what you can get and the chance depends on your current tier compared to the research rating.

Ahhh so I can research a 1/5 at level 300+ and still get a Slight Insight! That's cool! I thought I was going to have to go farm materials
That's based on luck, don't know the % though. My alt got like 7 slight insights out of 9 researchs. However- my main only has 2 insight and 3 greater insight.
Also, I think, with 5/5, you also able to recover more components
My crafting is at 400, I have never trained anything from my focus trainer, yet He has nothing for me to learn either. I do get incites on occasion from more than 4 items while researching.
If your speciality trainer has nothing on him to learn.. he's not your specialty trainer.
Or else, you have your merchant filters set wrong, at the top right of the window.
I don't understand the ratings in general. When you start out most things are 5/5. What exactly changes as you go up in level? What effects that number? Anything? Even breaking apart lower level drops gets 0/5 or 1/5. I researched about 8 items at 4/5 and got about 3 components. Does anyone know for a fact what those ratings are based on? It's extremely frustrating.
I understand lots of things change and some things they'd like you to "discover". But the online manual is grotesquely unburdened with information.

The quality and level of the items used.
Also, Tier 1 & 2 are intended to be easy to get 5/5s for, so even low quality items will quickly get you a 5/5 rating. Tier 3 & 4 are intended to be quite a bit harder, so you'll most likely need multiple good quality items to get a 5/5 rating (level 40 Purples should be able to do it on their own even for Tier 4).
The skill raise from research seems dependent upon the rating as well. From 200-300 if I had a 5/5 I would get 4 skill points almost every time. If I had less than that I would get fewer skill points or even none at all at the lower end.

At lower tiers, it the ratings will give more skill points than they will at the higher tiers.
