Part: one
Grayson Cole
I never really fit in growing up. I spent my younger years waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. I always wanted to be a hero. By early adulthood I realized that was never going to happen. Most of the supers that were mutants developed their powers as early teens. All I got was a high pitched voice and acne. That never discouraged me from wanting to help others. That's what lead me there that day. My desire to help. Once I realized that "normal" was my fate I got a job as an E.M.T in Millenium city.
Part: two
The invasion
It had been a few weeks since my life was changed forever. It all plays back in my head like a movie. The flaming Qularr prisoner transport vessel screeching over my head. The pressure against my body from the initial shockwave of the impact. It nearly blew me back against the ambulance.
The ship was left smoking and spewing glowing material only a hundred feet away. The first thing I noticed after the smoke cleared was a huge crack in the hull. I never really had second thoughts about entering. Almost an instinctual thing really.
Part: three
You see a lot of things running a meat wagon in millenium city. Nothing could prepare me for what I was about to see.
The smell inside was a pungeant hanging funk. Like on a hot summer day when you forget to take out the garbage, only a hundred times worse. Apparently both the qularr pilot and co pilot were killed on impact. I didn't need my medical training to see that. My eyes scanned the wreckage and that's when I saw them for the first time. Their containment cells were broken open. I saw the first of two prisoners lying on the floor near the front of the ship. He was moaning as he came back into conciousness. I looked back towards the back and saw my future for the first time. Impaled on one of the consoles was a prisoner who was not as fortunate as the first. A hulk of a man almost stoic in his death. A blue liquid spewed from his open chest cavity. Below where he was hanging the last of a shiny black tar dripped from his foot.
That was when it made first contact. I heard him inside my head for the first time.
The voice was soothing and sounded as if it had some ancient wisdom. "Your sense of justice has chosen our path". Before I could think, answer or comprehend what that meant a crackle of electricity sounded through the cabin. The puddle of tar became animated. It jutted up and towards me. It shot at me and spread itself out into a thin sheet. Before I could speak or react it landed on my coating my skin. It covered my face and chest first. I couldn't breath. The tar moved over my skin and as I struggled for air the last thing I remember was a blinding white explosion.
Part: Four
The instant i opened my eyes I could feel it. Was this a dream? At first I was startled. I stood up slowly and turned around to see where I was. I was on the second floor ledge of a building looking across the city below me. there was a crater in the side of the building behind me about the size of my body. Still trying to figure everything out I reached my hand to the back of my neck and found his hiding spot. The voice came again. "Grayson our destiny is now one, please relax we are fine". This time the voice was closer. And how did it know my name? I had a 1 inch wide strip down my back. It was cold to the touch.. like touching cool metal. I found myself responding. Even though I still did no believe what was happening. Who are you?, I asked.
"We are a race of what your people call parasites. We come from a planet where 2 races work together to keep the Qularr in check. Their devastation does not just afflict your world. The being hanging from the Qularr console was my previous host and friend. We were one for centuries. Until his death seperated us moments before you entered that ship."
Ok this was a serious load dropped into my lap. As I gazed down at the coutless innocents falling victim to the invasion he chimed in again.
"we can help them"
Im just a paramedic. I can try to pick up the pieces, but......
"What you knew of your former self is still true but working in unison we are more. All of your senses, your agility have been modified at the most cellular levels. do you not feel it?"
Part: five
It was right I did feel different. I could hear the mayor in the distance commanding the police via radio under his tent. I looked out towards the champions Headquarters and concentrated. I zoomed in to see Ironclad bashing Qularr.
"And thats not all."
Instantly it spread across my skin again. Coating my entire body in a black and yellow metallic irradescent sheath. Was this the other shoe I had been waiting my whole life for?
"In time you will discover all that we can do. commanding dark matter and dimensional energies will become routine. My previous host learned to shape me into a very fearsome looking suit of battle armor. He always said the scarier we look, the more doubt we would instill. I can feel it, your anxious now. Go ahead Grayson, take a leap."
