I had a long thought out review of the crafting system written down but the website screwed up so apparently I lost everything I had written. Picture something amazing, and well thought out and that is pretty much what it was. Oh well though here's the abbreviated version.
I don't have a large amount of experience with every MMO ever made and honestly I have only played, WAR, CoX, LoTRO, and WoW. Since I have the most experience with WoW and it's crafting professions then that is what I will be comparing Champions to (loosely of course). This is not saying that I feel Champions needs to copy everything that WoW does. It just means that I feel WoW has done some things right in their crafting system imo and that maybe Cryptic can assimilate some of it to make their own with a little Champions spin.
Progression: As of right now I only feel like I am progressing through crafting in Champions from a numerical standpoint. Hey look i'm level 100 now... whoopty doo. In WoW you started off with ridiculously crappy items (i.e. copper bolts, bolts of cloth, leather scraps...) and you built your profession up to make eventually very useful products you could either use or sell (i.e. mounts, epic gear, crazy devices, you get the idea). In Champions you start off at level 1 and it's like hey check it out I can make Nuclear Fission Goggles... wait. What? Or hey I found this World Stone inside that dead animal skull over there. Sweet. I guess i'll take it to a table and use my level 20 mysticism skill to create an Omnipotent Flak Jacket of Valtrex or something else that sounds way too powerful for a level 10 hero.
Immersion: I don't really get the full immersion of Champions. All the items sound like they were just randomly thrown in, shaken up, and reused with only the stats being raised as you go along. They don't really feel as if they fit all that well in the setting and were just kind of tacked on. In WoW the items you created flowed naturally and made sense (copper bolts + Copper tube = Copper modulator, Linen cloth + thread = linen robe) Champions is like hellstone + aether + strange book = Wizard Hat of the Raging Gorilla Storm or something (note: item may or may not exist in game... i'm not sure because I made it up and it's weird because it actually sounds like something you would come across in this game)
Benefits: I feel that Champions' crafting system suffers greatly in regards to this. I just don't feel as if the professions really give me much incentive for doing them besides the bags and the occasional short lived higher stat item. From my experience the only smart way to level a profession in CO is to just research what items you can and then sell what you can't back to an NPC. This does nothing to put money back into the economy.
In WoW you made certain items, sold them in the AH, and were encouraged to participate in the community in order to get what you needed and to sell what you didn't. I also feel that players of one profession should have to rely on another to get certain items which would otherwise be unattainable for them.
Anyways that's my two cents on my experiences so far. I love the game, I really do. I just feel that the crafting system has a long way to go. I was just curious as to the thoughts of others on the matter.

I ave been crafting since then. Moslty invocations or consumable items that help me fight. I made some trinkets too, which could help me out. I sell the rest and they sell for much!!! I was able to swap a few powers without useing my free Retspec.
