Will Crafting ever be as customizable as the rest of the game?

Hello all,

I don't know about most folks here, but I'm really kind of disappointed by the crafting system. Don't get me wrong, I think 90% of it is really great. I love the experimentation aspect especially well. However, one thing that baffles me (as you could probably guess from the thread title) is the lack of customization. That is, if I have a character that needs Str and Con, I need to take Arms....even if my character is a Greek God. This bothers me.

You see, the whole game has customization as a major, major focus. You can customize so many things about your appearance. You can write a wholly unique background. You can choose any name. You can mix and match powers to make just what you envision. BUT...you must take the ONE type of crafting that fits your stats. Want a person who was magically empowered to be super strong and super durable? Well, that's perfectly doable...but they'd better stop that magic garbage when it comes to crafting if they want to be really good. And what if you have (like my main) Rec and Con as your superstats? There is no crafting type that gives both of those as major abilities.

At least you do get the choice of specialties. I mean, the hero mentioned above can at least study fighting styles instead of getting guns. But still, it's quite limiting, and it just feels wrong for him to have to collect kevlar to improve himself.

This has always been very irksome to me, but now with the latest patch it's become far, far more prominent, and I just can't sit silently by anymore.

I can't imagine that I'm the only person who feels that crafting is the one thing that's working entirely cross-purpose to customization. And I guess I'm just hoping others can chime in and tell me I'm not off base. And maybe...just maybe...someone from Cryptic might read this and agree. So if you agree, or have more to say, or suggestions to alleviate my problem, please post.

Thanks,

Kayn

It is my understanding that you an level up a crafting skill learn what ever, Drop that skill move to something else and retain all the knowlage you learned prior. so infact it is kinda neat. plus npcs drop rare bp's that you cannot buy so maybe im wrong but i think its a step in the right direction.

Yeah but by keep the knowledge they mean "Oh you want to drop fighting styles for ordnance? Okay those are both arms so you can make both if you skill back up." it's more of this "Oh you want to drop fighting styles for avatars? Those don't use the same base you only get to use one." Anyway to the OP I fully agree, back before the crafting fix a character that was a mystic shaman had to come to me a science crafter for her gear, made no sense in character theme, and now with the fix in with her stat focus she has no crafter to turn to at all.

I wish I could find the quote where Antiproton mentioned making some of the highest level and best crafting stuff Bind on Acquire. The crafting system would be so good if it gave you the freedom to play within your theme. But as it is, it's either totally non-immersive or totally worthless, or, if you have a character that happens to match it, awesome. And the last patch made this even stronger. Ah well. At least the rest of character creation and development is great. :)

    Well your in luck :)

you no longer have to compromise your theme for crafting. as of the latest patch there isn't anything you can make in crafting that isn't available via the regular drops you will be getting and mission reward items. It's all the same so be a mystic if you wanna be :)

crafting is now basically just a time/money sink with no utility

*and i was really trying very hard to like this game :(

Heh. Good point, but that isn't exactly the way I was hoping to resolve the issue. ;)
