Like an idiot, I posted this in the General Gameplay forum not realizing that there is a dedicated UI forum so here's the post in the right place:
Go ahead and open this image since it shows all the items I will be talking about:
Modified Champs UI
The basic ideas are these:
-It's impossible to tell what role your teammates are playing
-The icons for items in your bag are not very helpful in letting you know what they actually are
-Builds shortcuts would be more useful if they at least showed what role the corresponding build is.
-Colors representing the different roles and item types are a quick way to get your bearings on your toon, your teammates and your items: Red for Avenger/Offensive item, Blue for Gaurdian/Defensive item, Green for Sentinal/Utility item.
Here follows a brief description of the modified UI in the image above:
1 - Character Portrait - Color of border reflects that toon is currently in Guardian role. This is reenforced by also having the Guardian shield icon on the portrait.
2 - Teammates - Teammates' character portraits are also color coded along with the appropriate role icon to signify what role they are in - Yellow Snow - Sentinal, Dart - Guardian, Thrustmaster - Avenger, Dr. Gearloose - Protector (Default)
3 - Powers Bar - Powers bar is colored to correspond to the role currently being used.
4 - Builds Quickbar - The outline color corresponds to the role for that particular build. An icon is also added for any build that is not using the default Protector role. So in this case F5 is using Guardian, F6 is using Avenger and F7 is using Protector (the default)
5 - Inventory Items - Items have an added icon that correnspondes to the color and iconography used in the character slots (item 6). There is also the added Mask icon for items that unlock a costume piece as well as an outline around the last item received/looted. Consumables and temporary powers are marked with the corresponding icon used by the quick bar below (the C1-C5 bar).
6 - Slotted items bar - The heading icons correspond to the colors used for the items for each slot to visually make it easier for the user to figure out which items fit in which slots.
Some Things I Left Out: I had toyed with having a slightly different icon for inventory items that were Secondary Items as opposed to Primary items. Would probably be a good idea to do that as well but since this is just an example to illustrate an idea I didn't bother. Also wanted to show some suggestions for the Character Stats window and the grouping screen. May do that at another time. Spent way more time on just this than I had planned.
