The search function in the marketplace is simply awful. This is a shame, as in spirit the crafting system is excellent, and has great potential for a very fun part of the game.
Here are some very basic issues with it:
- Cannot search for two word plus items. Typing in more than a single word of an item most of the time returns a blank, even though it is there.
- Cannot search by school. (Something people clearly would want)
- Cannot search by main stat. (Another obvious thing to want).
- Cannot search by powerset (for power enhancers, for example)
- Blueprints, for some reason, do not show at all on search. Why this should be, I have no idea... perhaps because they are categorised by skill level rather than item level?
- If the search parameters are too wide, it gives up and returns nothing, even though the items are there
This is basic 101 stuff. Neither is there anything we might expect of a more sophisticated auction house, such as price checking functions and so forth.
This terrible search functionality is compounded by the fact that no expiry date and no placement fee for items means the whole thing is clogged up with poorly priced rubbish, making any search even more complicated.
Overall, it is clear, the marketplace is really very poor, compared to current MMO standards.
Following this patch and free respec, I was hoping that the economy would take off. But this dog's dinner of an auction house guarantees that will not happen.
It is a shame, as people will blame the inevitable failure of the crafting game on the crafting system. In reality, that system - while needing work - shows a lot of creativity and promise. But until the marketplace is fixed, it is hamstrung.
UI Guru is aware of many marketplace issues (and the marketplace programmers are too), but definitely submit your bugs in game so he can get them added to his to do list if they aren't duplicates. Thanks for the feedback.
Agreed. I usually love auction houses in games but this one needs a lot of work. It takes longer than it should to find what you need. They need to take a look at WoWHead and other MMO 3rd party sites to get a good idea of how to implement a good search engine for items.
In addition I'd add a time limit to each auction. If you don't want to charge people use for the Auction House, I'd have a diminishing timer on each auction per account (not per toon because people will just create multiple AH bankers). So the first auction has a time limit of 4 days/96 hours, the second has a time limit of 92 hours, etc. That acts as a hindrance to market manipulation, while still giving people plenty of opportunity to sell a lot of goods.

I hate timers but I reluctantly agree with you. I don't know if there is a timer on auctions yet, but if not, the AH system will become slow when attempting to sift through all that garbage.
Adding the ability to search based on price and adding a timer to items would go a long way in jump starting the crafting/economy.
Idiots who overprice stuff would never sell anything and be forced to lower the price which would bring the market into gear, - which would clean up a lot of the crap sitting dormant on the auction house database and probably make it search/move faster.
- So would adding a timer to things if they don't sell. - maybe 48 hours to start and adjust it from there.
2 quick fixes that could be added while the rest of it is redesigned/overhalled.
