crafting without a table

hitting the 'U' key brings up the crafting window anywhere. When I tried researching an item, the quality bar said 0/0. When at a table, the same item said 5/5.

Why are we able to craft without tables? What is the point if you get no xp for researching?

    I suppose its just if you want the mats, are are already maxed out on your skill, no need to force people to run back to town all the time
