Can I use items from any Skill ?

I chose Mysticism - but all of the loot I have so far was Arms or Science.

So I think I can only research + craft Mysticism items, right?

But can I still use Arms/Science items? (I still have some equipped)

Are the slotted inventory items always passive? There are numbers below the slotted items (8, 9, 0) but nothing seems to happen when I press those numbers.

    yes.

    you can research craft mysticism.

    you can wear anything.

    some slotted gear will have abilities that you can activate, the majority is passive stat buffs though.

    I appreciate how basic this is, but with so little information to go on....
    If I place an item into one of those nine slots, I've equipped it, right? No paperdoll anywhere that I should be using instead?

    No, no paperdoll.

    A few crafted items unlock costume options though - mostly, but not entirely, the power-replacing weapons.

    You can use items of any specialization, but you can only craft & research those from your own personal profession
