Icons are for QUICK identification, but they don't work!

When I get something new in my inventory (and this applies to almost any inventory icon) the icon doesn't identify what the object is or how it works. It doesn't scream,

1. I AM PRIMARY DEFENSE, or
2. I AM FOR THOSE WHO FOCUS ON DEXTERITY, or
3. THIS IS A BADASS FIND AND YOU CAN TELL FROM THIS BADASS ICON, or
4. THE ICON ISN'T PLAIN AND DULL, BUT FLASHY AND GNARLY LOOKING, THEREFORE I AM FOR HIGH LEVEL CHARACTERS

Maybe I'm missing a pattern, and if I am please explain, but I've been finding myself staring for long periods of time trying to figure out what inventory items to put where. I haven't played much WoW, but for me their icons clicked for me like second nature. This, I have noticed, has presented me with a gigantic learning curve. The icons don't exactly imply common sense, so when I see a dream catcher icon I cannot identify whether it's for offense, defense, a craft item, a quest item, or anything. But apparently that dream catcher I'm talking about is secondary offense, heh ok.

There is a way to tell, but I agree the icons could use a helping hand to help clarify.

Basically you have to ignore the icons, the way equipment is built is kinda weird. Like you mentioned, the item icons are pretty random and give no indication to what it's for. Instead look at the background color of the icons. My memory is a little fuzzy at the moment but I believe Red is offensive, Blue?? is defensive, and green is utility. Beyond that, primary versions of these slots are much brighter in color and secondary versions are a duller version of the same color. It's not perfect, but it atleast should help when digging through your inventory.

As far as whether or not it's good for you build (focusing on specific stats) that's basically as simple as looking at whatever its statted with, so that's pretty relative to what you're looking for.

    Anyways, hope I helped out.

Yes actually, I think that helps me out to a great extent. I was so frustrated w/ the whole system that it made me kinda ignore my inventory as much as possible. I appreciate the input. Now for my next thread, why some enemy bots do not die when their health reaches zero.
