I have an item which gives me 50% root and hold resistence.
I am not sure what this means in practice, as it seems very powerful for an early 20s item, but does this mean that if I got two, I could create 100* resistence and therefore be unrootable?
Yes, items that grant resistance do stack. However, having 100% resist will not make you immune. It enhances your current resist to control, which is based off your strength and ego for tangible and intangible holds, respectively.
For example, on your character screen (hit the "c" button), if you mouse over your strength it will show you your tangible breakfree strength. This is what that enhancement modifies. It's compared to hold strength as a flat value, not as a percentage. You can have +200% control resist and still not be immune, though if you have a high corresponding stat and an enhancement item you may as well be. I hope I made sense.
