Please give more of a clear sense what sub disciplines do

I went avatar, in mysticism... but have absolutely no idea how to differentiate it from the other versions.

No worries, I am sure there will be some use for the stuff I make, but it's weird how little information there is about these subspecialities. Are they substantially different, or purely cosmetic.

To be honest, I don't see how anyone makes any informed choice at this moment as to what speciality to take... but I guess it will begin to emerge over time.

So, to be clear - flavour text simply is cosmetic?

Exactly. It's just a way to have gear that might fit the style of your character's build/background better.

OK. Well, that's very helpful to know.

It is not clear from the description in game, and while I like the idea, it is certainly confusing.

OK - challenge the next - to understand what that list of stats really means for the three main schools.

It's the emphasis of those stats in the different items in the different disciplines. BUT, that's only for the Set Stat Items you can craft. After you get to Variable Crafting around level 25, you can build whatever you want as long as you've bought the proper Enhancements.
