I have my settings somewhere between low and recommended.
I went into the ATI catalyst control center (ATI 4650 M)
Turned off EVERYTHING that says (use program settings) I forced AA to 8x, Forced Antiscropic, etc.. and turned on tripple bufffering.
Set my AA to Edge detect (seemed to yield the highest settings) so now my game actually looks pretty decent and I get about 35 FPS on average and dip to about 20 when traveling (rocket boots) through crowded areas. Some place still lag me to 10 and 15, but atleast its playable
SEEMS to me that this game just makes poor use of your video card, and probably has the CPU deciding how to use it on the fly or something. But forcing the graphics UP on the CARD has had NO negative impact on my FPS, even when using the exact same options that are available in game, and in many cases has increased performance.
SET AA in game to OFF and max it on your card gain 5 FPS. same for many other options, gaining 3 FPS a piece or at the least yielding a better image with no loss of FPS.
Give it a shot guys, let me know.
BY THE WAY credit for the idea goes to many other bored members, I just wanted to put it out there, I am in no way trying to take credit for others hard work..
I got a Geforce 9800GTX and after testing every forced AA setting in the control panel I can without doubt say I get the absolute best game performance forcing AA to.. 16xQ.
Believe it or not but I gain about 5 FPS for every time I raise the AA, so from 2xAA to 16xQ I gained roughly 20 FPS in the center of M city where I tested this.
Funny enough forcing AA does not really do much about the jaggies in the game, guess that is down to the strange engine, which apparently also is acting funny about how it makes use of the GPU.
My guess is, the more powerful a GPU you got, the more you will gain from this "trick", crank that AA way up in the GPU control panel and watch the FPS go up with it.
Considering the OP uses ATI and I use Nvidia it is possible this trick might work for all GPU types too.
yeah Ive done some extensive testing.. so far I can say this without a doubt
1) Turn all in game options OFF set game settings to LOWEST.
2) now go into your card, leave the game in a window, and check every single card option you have. If it matches an ingame option (IE: Anti Alias) Force it on, on the card and max it out (or set it appropriately for your card) and leave it off in game.
3) make note of what options you turned on, in your GPU settings, and leave these alone in game.
4) now start turning options up in game that dont have settings on your card, keep turning them up, as long as they dont effect your FPS too much.
5) this will yield the best results.
NOTE: MANY of the ingame options, have little to no effect on my FPS, and most likely will be the same for you guys, regardless of card type.
Many of these options are GPU specific, try playing around and finding what works best for your system. Certain options put a major strain on your CPU, and as we all know this is the heart of the problem
PROTIP: bind Z to Toggle UI. use Travel power, tap Z, and travel with no UI up.
IF someone out there can find a way to bind a key to turn off every UI option except mini map, it would be hugely appreciated, for just this reason.
