Power replace confusion

I got the alien gun from the newbie tutorial mission. I was under the impression that we could get the 'affects' from the drops but not change our characters looks?

I went to the tailor and picked the alien gun model, took it for a test drive and hated its looks. Went back to the tailor and re-picked my old 6 guns model. If I equip the alien blaster item just for the toxic damage it changes my revolvers to the alien model.

No a huge deal just wandering if working as intended? Iwas under the impression that if we wanted just the stats and affects from drops, we could pick and choose any gun model or costume model, use the items stats, but keep our characters concept?

    nope, if you use a power replacer for the stats you are using that weapon. It wouldn't make sense to get the stats and not be using the weapon that gives them.

    No, but it does work the other way around. You can keep the looks of an item even when you're not using it by changing your weapon model at the tailor.

    Does it have to be in your inventory for the effect to work? Or can I bank an item after I change the effect, and still keep the effect?

    Maybe I'm slow... was this explained anywhere in-game?
