Can Someone explain item enhancement for dummies?

I don't what the result of crafting is, but I am trying to figure out exactly how the dropped items you get for like primary offense that have an enhancement on it. When it says it is not currently effecting any power.

Can someone give a brief explanation as to how they work, in terms of do you need special enhancements for special powers etc etc?

    shows how much I know, I knew you could make some guns, but didn't know you could augment powers with crafting. Does that mean you can get more cosmetic options for powers?

    That slot just displays exactly what powers are being boosted by the item. It will only display the powers it enhances if it is equipped, which is too bad - it would be more useful if it always worked.

    So if I have Force Bolts, Force Blast and Laser Sword, then I equip an item which adds toxic damage to Force attacks, it will say it is affecting Force Bolts and Force Blast.
