I bound Pet controls commands on my Gamepad to save my sanity with Sidekicks' AI šŸŽ®

A thread archive from 2009! SUPER USEFUL with the recent updates and new features

One of my favorite features on Champions Online is the ability to play the whole game with a Gamepad accessibility!
Even since Day 1 I started playing the game I used Gamepads! It gives me more flexibility and overall I enjoy playing the game like it's a PS2 game [Complimentary] it feels more Dynamic and Comfy to me!

I have done Endgame content with Gamepad, Tanked Cosmics (then got bored of Cosmic endgame), done alerts, the FM Ring Race event feels better with a movement stick!
The only drawback is the Menu navigation but I don't care about that Since i used it 100% for combat

Nowadays I enjoy doing more Solo Content with a respectful difficulty like QWZ dailies! Almost all the characters who do them have a Loyal Sidekick as a companion after the explosion of the game studio deciding that Loyal Sidekicks inside Lockboxes and Events is the next Gimmick to capitalize on! (I don't like the majority of the Lockbox sidekicks thought, they are not all theme friendly and most of them are ugly)

I notice how stupid the Pet's AI in general is but more issues made it even more obvious how hopeless they are!

Am I a fan of pet builds? NOT ANYMORE THAT'S FOR SURE! My Summoner build got revamped and he is sitting in AH waiting for a better theme build!
Not to mention how much Fragile and useless Command Pets have become! On new content like Death Rattle they get DESTROYED


Even with Pets/Sidekicks Schmovement being updated recently, it didn't fix a lot of issues
  • It kept getting stuck on obstacles that it could simple jump to bypass, but during combat Sidekicks COMPLETELY FORGET about movement for some stupid reason
  • Attacking enemies I accidentally targeted out of my range
    Targeting an enemy out of range and attempting to attack will give you the message [Enemy out of Range] but your Sidekick will immiatle set it self aggressive on that target once you finish fighting the current group of enemies
  • Travel long distances in QWZ, the pet may accidentally get attacked by a MOB!
    Now the pet has set you in Combat phase fighting back the enemies, it won't teleport into you and its Pet portrait has vanished! even if you keep running away and It will get itself killed and despawn (Logging out and in will help you getting the idiot killed before it's too late)
  • In QWZ Terminus Base, The Terror Batteries are such MASSIVE entities it keeps getting into your Targeting range
    if you accidentally target them and hit an attack the pet will be concentrate only on them, ignoring the other targets (same with rocket launchers)
    I had a lot cases I needed help with fighting the Sharks around the area, only for my Sidekick to be busy attacking a Battery šŸ„ŗ
  • My experience with my Ex-Summoner build on QWZ was dreadful! Imagine how much chaotic was to control multiple controllable pets!
    I tried to run away from battle range to make them teleport to me, but places like Terminus Base are so packed with enemies it's impossible to find space to breath
    My Experience with my AOED Darkness Necromancer on the other hand is a cake walk in QWZ! Uncontrollable pets are somehow more organized (but can't attack targets longer than 50 feet range)

So after learning about Gamepad binding thread I decided to expand my control on sidekicks and straight up bind the commands on gamepad
I recommend viewing my (Loyal) Sidekicks' pathfinding AI breaks when they come across obstacles thread where I attempted to visually report the AI stupidity of Sidekicks!

You will understand why I decided to Map the commands for fast access!

Binding those Gamepads will screw up Baked In powertray for Become Devices, OSV villain and Vehicles (LOL)
Be aware of this screw up

PET on Command
I noticed how greatly AI acts on different commands!
Be aware that those commands DO NOT work with uncontrollable pets
šŸ›”ļø This is the Defensive Stance Command ā† + X
/bind Joypad_left+Xb "PetCommands_SetAllPetsState Passive"
As the command suggest it makes your pets Passive!
  • Regroup your pets together!
  • They won't attack at all, they will immediately cease attack,
  • They will always follow you and teleport to you if you run out of their range and they have FULL movement speed back! They can run the fastest
  • Meaning they can also jump obstacles if they get stuck šŸ˜± FULL Schmovement
  • You can save your PETS/SIDEKICKS during Cosmics AOEs (LOL)
    The only use I found it for using a Sidekick during Eidolon!
    šŸ’” If your sidekick is fights inMelee range and Eidolon has just summoned the huge purple AOE Field (Suns of Oblivion or whatever), you can save your sidekick from getting 1-2 shot by switch to passive and having it traveling back to you in a safe distance

Perfect to make sure nobody will attack any mob close to you, reset their Target AI and strategically place yourself in the next spot!

/bind Joypad_left+Yb "PetCommands_SetAllPetsState Assist"
The Default command your pets have as soon as they get summoned
  • They will immediate attack any MOB that attacks you
  • They will heal you
  • - CAN break the Pets' if you are a Healer, targeting an ally and healing can cause the pets to auto-follow them without doing anything! I believe this also happens with the aggressive one

I usually Rotate between Passive and Aggressive stance but this good to have as 3rd option

AGGRESSIVE all out attack for Pets
Full Aggression AI on pets
  • They will attack you target enemy even before you attack (TIP: use a charged attack on the target like a blast, and cancel it via blocking, it will make the pets attack them for sure)
  • Highly Aggressive, will switch targets once the main enemy is down instead of returning back to you every time
  • - Can screw up with Healing Drones BUT That's an entire can of worms -
  • Unfortunately Pets losing their movement and start walk slowly this way! This is why I got Passive after that

There is also "PetCommands_SetAllPetsState Dismiss" that turns your Pets OFF (not recommended for Sidekicks) and PetCommands_SetAllPetsState Stay that makes them stay still to a place!
I personally have no use of neither of them!

There are more specific commands for controllable pets with unique activation attacks, but I'm sorry I don't know them (I think they are available to view in the controls settings)

Do whatever Binding you like! I used those 3 Buttons because on my mind I think I'm using a PS2 controller despite having a Logitech one with XBOX buttons overlay

    āš ļø NOTE: Since the Power Variable Device tray update, Dpad Left + Button combination has been updated and registered to work with PVDs the same way Dpad Right + Button


    More ~ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS~

    If you play with a Gamepad and want to use PVDs, I HIGHLY Recommend binding them on your power-tray respectful buttons and avoid completely the Dpad Left + Button combination unless you like to turn your hand like a Claw, the same way you play Kid Icarus Uprising on 3DS

    The ā† + Button is better for fast commands and click devices rather than holding it down for maintenance/charge powers while trying to move and attack on the same time!
    Trust me I did QWZ dailies when PVDs were still regular Devices, the default scheme was NOT fun šŸ„“
    /bind ButtonOfYourChoice "+inventoryexec DevicesWeapons 0"

    For Example I have characters who use U-MD Ghosthunter Phase Rifle/Pulp Fiction Ray Gun/Frost Rifle/Lightning Bolter/Toxic Rifle

    Bound them on the Y Button
    /bind YB "+inventoryexec DevicesWeapons 1"

    The powertray will now be occupied and by PVDs device tray you bound! Putting a power there like Two Gun Mojo won't activate it all (Keyboard will still Normal)
    But I also have FF characters who use Ultimate Chest Beam, Ultimate Brimstone or Ultimate Orbital Cannon! Bound them on the Powertray I always put my Ultimate
    /bind LB+AB "+inventoryexec DevicesWeapons 3"

    Your PVDs powertray will have those JOY commands on it now, meaning the remapping worked!

    When i was tanking cosmics I did so much damage to my Right hand with Constantly having to hold down the R2 +L2 Triggers for so long! šŸ˜©
