Alter-ego device

Inspired by the disguise device in the prison portion of "Resistance:"

It would be kind of like one of the "Become" devices, in that it would replace the player's powers and travel powers (in this case for something more mundane, like a low-level melee attack or even just a "howdy" wave...standard motion would be reduced to a walk, while the TP would be what is normally the un-powered run.)*

BUT—and I must stress that I don't know if this is something that's even possible—instead of changing a character's appearance (that would be for the player to do with purchased costume slots,) it would possibly remove the SG, maybe/maybe not remove the title, but most importantly change the character's display name, using either a pop-up dialogue box when the device is activated or an added "real name" field on the description tab of the character sheet. It would essentially operate as a non-permanent reusable rename token.

As a bonus, since you're now disguising yourself as a civilian, it might even automatically generate a certain amount of aggro, so that low-level mooks attack again for no reason...maybe.

Now, I can't imagine this would be something many people would want to pay real money for; it's essentially a strictly RP device that would add nothing of real playability to the game. So I figure it could drop at certain events, like the Anniversary or FoxbatCon, both of which seem to celebrate the traditional conventions of the superhero genre more specifically than most of the others. Alternatively, it could be available for SCR or Until Recognition at Champions HQ (where one would go to "register") or at Sherrera's/the Minefield/Club Caprice (where one would go looking for a cover identity.)

*I know this part can be done with builds on FF characters or by just choosing not to use certain powers even as an AT. The important part is the name thing.

To clarify, you'd still know a disguised player character when you saw one; you just wouldn't automatically know who they were.

Technically, the ability to make a device like this would be possible. The Chair, Chariot, and Hoverbike vehicles are devices that change your powers while still keeping whatever costume you have on. But the likelihood of getting a device like this is low, given that all of this can be done already, without a device.

It would be kind of neat to have an innate capacity to have civilian appearance... and perhaps a way to get a job or something... though what about the aliens and mutants? Are they going to be forced to take on a human disguise?

You mean like the Gadroon in City Center who pretend to be Human?

Yep, for some that's great. Heck I've got a toon that might end up going that route. However, she's not going to be happy about it.

Well, again, the important thing would be the name. Click on someone normally, and it says "Superspider;" click on them when disguised, it would say "Peter Kent."

Almost all my toons have civilian costumes. But other players still see, for example, "Meridian" even when he's dressed as "Josh Feinberg."

I know it's not likely to happen. I just had the idea and wanted to throw it out there.

No, the appearance would be for you to set yourself with a costume slot. The only thing changing with this device is your name and maybe your powers. "That which sleeps'" civilian identity of "Charles W. Thulhu" would still be an eldritch monster in a shirt, tie, and glasses.
