Aura of Radiant Protection Tank

Hi All,

I recently came back to Champions Online after a 1 1/2 year hiatus. I love building tanks and I pretty much played with all sorts of builds except one. I tried making an Aura of Radiant Protection/Single Blade or Heavy Weapon Tank, but so far, I'm not satisfied. I was wondering if one of the CO experts can help me with an awesome build. I mainly run Cosmics. Any suggestions?

AORP isn't really going to give you the protection you need to tank or be in melee at cosmics IMHO. If you're tanking cosmics you are better off with Defiance.

AORP hybrid tanks are fine for 99% of the game, but cosmics usually require players be in traditional builds/roles.

I'm not sure you'll have enough effective health to main tank, or generate enough energy (if not, then maybe get more End and/or Str), but I here's an AoRP HW tank:

    (Unnamed Build) - Freeform
    v2.3.2-25

    Super Stats
    Level 6: Strength (Primary)
    Level 10: Constitution (Secondary)
    Level 15: Presence (Secondary)

    Talents
    Level 1: The Hero (Str: 8, Dex: 8, Con: 8, Int: 8, Ego: 8, Pre: 8, Rec: 6, End: 6)
Level 6: Physical Conditioning (Str: 5, Con: 5)
Level 9: Shrug It Off (Con: 5, Pre: 5)
Level 12: Impressive Physique (Str: 5, Pre: 5)
Level 15: Quick Recovery (Con: 5, Rec: 5)
    Level 18: Relentless (Str: 5, Rec: 5)
Level 21: Lasting Impression (Pre: 5, Rec: 5)

    Powers
    Level 1: Bludgeon
    Level 1: Cleave (Rampant, Challenge!)
    Level 6: Enrage (Endorphin Rush)
Level 8: Aura of Radiant Protection (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 11: Thermal Reverberation
Level 14: Incendiary Grenade (No Quarter, Challenge!)
    Level 17: Conviction (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 20: Annihilate (Rank 2, Scorching Blade, Challenge!)
Level 23: Absorb Heat (Rank 2, Rank 3, Challenge!)
    Level 26: Resurgence (Rank 2)
    Level 29: Masterful Dodge
    Level 32: Antagonize (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 35: Decimate
Level 38: Circle of Primal Dominion (Rank 2)
    Adv. Points: 34/36

    Travel Powers
    Level 6:
    Level 35:

    Specializations
    Strength: Swole (2/3)
    Strength: Physical Peak (3/3)
    Strength: Brutality (2/2)
    Strength: Juggernaut (3/3)
    Protector: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Protector: Bulwark (2/2)
    Protector: Defensive Expertise (3/3)
    Protector: Resolute (2/3)
    Warden: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Warden: Ruthless (2/2)
    Warden: Elusive (2/2)
    Warden: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Mastery: Protector Mastery (1/1)

If a Support unit is offering AoRP already, then I wouldn't really advise this anyways as ur aura could disrupt theirs. But its possible to pull it off, I suppose.

Its viable to make the build tough though difficult to keep aggro because AoRP is effective on ether hybrid or support role.

Thank you Flowcyto, I'll tinker with this build and I have a few lvl 6 & 7 Pressure Defense Core, for more defense. I'll give this a try during Cosmics. Also, most of my toons have Justice Gear and Distingush Gear which should help so I'll just respec one of those.

Be careful if you're running Hybrid AoRP in a large group fight. There's a bug with AoRP where, if a player is under the effect of multiple AoRPs, that player's block does not reduce damage. This can get players killed at a Cosmic fight.

It seems that AoRPs of the same rank and role will not overlap. Support players running the passive are generally doing so at Rank 3 in Support role, so that tends to be the recommended use.

If you're running AoRP in Hybrid role, it will overlap with someone running it in Support role. You won't encounter the bug on your own character (an AoRP user is unaffected by someone else's AoRP); but if you click on your teammates (the ones not running AoRP themselves) and see more than one AoRP icon in their status bar, then they are subject to the block bug.

I personally can't recommend using AoRP on tanking if you are going to challenge for Cosmics unless you are just soloing any other missions.

Protector: Bulwark (2/2) doesn't provide any Threat generation bonus during using with hybrid role but just few additional health.

Now taking two [Confront] to primary offense gold colored gear as Modifications to keep aggro off from bunch of people doing DPS taking their right part to do, is very usual style.

AoRP has several problems such like already pointed by some one else.
Tanking Cosmics means you can't take any [Sentinel's Brooch] which would provides you huge amount of self heal.

And you have to choose ether low amount of self heal or low Threat generation.

I think it is impossible to MT Dino and Eido with AoRP tank. I think the build will be one-shot-killed no matter blocking with r3 power or amounts of Defense with r9 Mods. And non Healers could help you because everyone die after MT fall down by one shot.

I recommend to use DEFIANCE, INVULNERABILITY or LIGHTNING REFLEXES, but, most tanks using INVULNERABILITY or LIGHTNING REFLEXES are failing at Cosmics but only DEFIANCE. AoRP is totally useless on Tanking Cosmics.
I saw one LR tank doing good but only once at each Qwyjibo and Kiga run. But very rare case.

I'm afraid to sya but Tank with AoRP will become just a dead weight for team at Dino and Eido.

Take a look on tank guide here.

I have to say tank with AoRP is totally useless for Cosmics...Shall be good for soloing at other missions.

Basically if you're going to be in Hybrid with AoRP and lots of health then you would objectively be better off with an actual tanking passive because it would provide everything you want, along with other benefits. The tiny amount of defense your hybrid aura would be giving to those around you would be largely irrelevant. Even before you consider the block bug, it's just a pointless endeavor.

I did it for a while myself, and it's really underwhelming.

Specially unwelcomed at Dino and Eido. Just become a dead weightfor entire team up.
