Screen frequently blacks out and switches to desktop, but doesn't CRASH to desktop?

If I try to switch my screen to its actual resolution (1920x1080), or after trying to create a new character, the screen will turn black, and act like I hit alt-tab to the most recent previous window. I can click back to the CO window, but it will not have accepted whatever change I had made - my resolution stays the same, and I'm still choosing between Male and Female character types.

I will admit, this is the first time in a couple years I have played the game... but I would like to actually PLAY the game...

Slight update - apparantly windowed mode lets me play, but I can't play in Fullscreen.

If you like Fullscreen a lot, I actually recommend trying out Windowed Maximized if you're just using the regular Windowed mode. I find it's basically just fullscreen but instead of minimizing, it just floats all the things you tab to on top of the game when you swap.​​
