I play this game on a laptop PC with Linux Kubuntu 14.04. I just got online tonight and no sooner than I did 1 grab alert, they announced an emergency shutdown. Just prior to this someone in chat was commenting about a lag I was not experiencing however I wish to take this time to explain what I do know about network lags and Cryptic games.
Lags can be caused by several factors. From the computer you use, to the Cryptic server hosting 3 games and 2 with console formats, and all the computers in between. Let's start with the network, your computer connects to a local company and it routes your game data through many other computers between and they don't make a straight line to the source. If any signal "hop" is too slow you get a lag from a computer not even playing this game. The computer is just passing data from one to another. There is not much you can do to correct it. We had an issue at the clinic sending and receiving files on our network. The issue was a computer hub in Kansas. Sending medical records from Ontario to Vancouver, you wouldn't see Kansas as a direct path. It took more than a month of red tape to get a new DNS route.
Next there is the source, the server at Cryptic, in California. Proxies are again just relay stations. Cryptic hosts 3 games "Star Trek", "Neverwinter", and "Champions". If any of these games are in need of maintenance the server goes down. Also the same server has the PS4 and XB1 versions of "Star Trek" and "Neverwinter". If 8000 people are playing on the PC game, one can only estimate there are even more on the consoles. During the weekend this makes the server traffic extreme and heavy, and can cause lags too. From chat you can use /netgraph 1 to check the network speed and /netgraph 0 to turn it off.
Finally there is your machine, some will tell you lack GPU or CPU hardware, but even so, I am playing "Black Desert" on this same machine using my OS. Look up the system requirements for "Champions" and compare it to "Black Desert", "Guild Wars 2", and "DC Universe". If I can play all those games and only have trouble with this one, it is not my system. I enjoy playing "Champions" but Cryptic has a knack for spoiling the fun. If "Champions" is not playable this weekend, I simply will move to one of my other games and return later.
I hope this information will enlighten other players as to the cause of lags and outages in all the games they play.
Played "Star Trek Online" from 2011 - 2016
Played "Neverwinter Online" from 2014 - 2016
Still playing "Champions Online" on Linux Kubuntu 14.04 OS
