TWO stars are being lost when your hero is defeated by NPCs.
Previously, only one star was lost.
Previously each star was worth a 3% bonus, for 15% at 5 stars. Now, it appears the first 4 stars are worth only 2.5%, and the last (fifth) is worth 5%. When at full star-count, the 2-star penalty especially harmful, as you lose half your bonus (5% + 2.5% = 7.5%) with only one defeat.
Previously, If you had been at 5 stars for some time, your first defeat incurred so slight a penalty that you didn't lose a full star.
This aggressive defeat penalty is especially problematic for low level characters and new players, who suddenly lose a significant amount of healing and damage in situations where they obviously need it the most.

I have never observed a two star penalty in the past, and in fact have seen tool-tips on load screens indicating that the penalty for dying was 1 star, not 0 to 2 stars.
A character gains Stars by completing missions and defeating villains. A character loses one star each time they are defeated.

Yeah some things are broken... no I don't use/abuse them.. where would be the fun in that?
