"The internet is like a series of tubes..." :p

But, seriously, I can't give you a point by point, but that's the path through many different servers that your internet signal is traveling. The important part is that it always seems to stop at Cogent, because they play silly buggers with their servers to slow/stop/control the traffic that goes through them (because they want more money).

Any router not responding to icmp isn't a problem as long as they do actually route your. So your first, third and fourth trace don't show anything bad.

If you don't get any response from a certain point onward, that is a problem.

And this is why we want net neutrality..

But, seriously, I can't give you a point by point, but that's the path through many different servers that your internet signal is traveling. The important part is that it always seems to stop at Cogent, because they play silly buggers with their servers to slow/stop/control the traffic that goes through them (because they want more money).

And this is why we want net neutrality..
Come Jan 20th, it'll be a pipe dream sadly. :/

Hm so is there an actual solution or is it just wait for Cryptic and maybe cogent to stop being little bitches?

I expect CO support will amount to "send us a tracert and buy better internet" so I'm haven't bothered yet.

Nothing can be done about Cogent. Cryptic's connection problems are small compared to that one.

Not sure what you're waiting for Cryptic to do about this ( they don't control any part of the internet ), but don't hold your breath on Cogent. If anything it's probably gonna get worse.

Based on chaelks comment, we are both getting through cogent somehow but then get lost inside cryptic at various points?

Still, what are you waiting for cryptic to do? Whole buttloads of other people aren't having the same problem. If you could elaborate on what you mean by "stop being little bitches" then they could maybe act on your request... unless "being little bitches" is some new technical term associated with information technologies I'm not aware of.

The best solution is to contact your ISP, give them your tracert, ping and "ipconfig /all" results, preferbly in txt format. Tell your ISP that you want to change re-route your connection to Cryptic's servers and hopefully bypass Cogent.

I was about to do that but I ran another tracert and it looks like it has changed itself, is that normal?
Instead of like 10 steps with cogent it has 5 steps with telia. Then it gets to perfectworld and dies so I'm still not fully sure how this is an internet routing problem.

I'm not much of a tech guru, but to me if you drive to someones house and the front door is jammed you don't blame the road for not being able to go inside.

CS did not have much to offer, I don't live in USA so I think they are amazed I ever connected at all :)

You don't need to be a tech guru to understand what packet losses are and my instructions on contacting your ISP to get them to help you in this situation. You can make all the pings and tracerts all you want, but that's not going to solve the problem you have.

Your road analogy doesn't even make sense since this has to do with the road being problematic and not Cryptic's front door. If it was, explain how others and myself are getting good connections with little to no lag? Heck I also don't even live in the US and I'm in South-East Asia.

the response i got from CS was, well with that speed, you're going to have trouble playing.... I pointed out, I'd been playing for 5 years with that. NO response

CS isn't in the position to help, your ISP is.

I will do some reading this weekend and see what I see :) I thought it was very curious that tracert seemed to be saying everything was fine until it reached perfectworld and THEN went bad but maybe I am just interpreting it wrong.

Well, it's possible that your stuff is getting goofed up on the way there, and then since it's goofed when it arrives the server can't do what it needs to do with it. Cause you know, if the delivery guy smashes your ikea stuff to bits it's not really your fault you can't put that table together.

    Analogies are fun.

If you understood that the problem is potentially somewhere along the route that your ISP uses to connect you to Cryptic's servers, which is really outside Cryptic's jurisdiction, then the analogy isn't far-fetched.

Well I didn't think it was that at first from what I was seeing, but I'm willing to take your guys word for it and spinnys analogy did fit with mine pretty well I thought. Instead of the door being jammed, the door only opens for properly built ikea Fergenblendlfjordblakkens but mine got all busted on the drive over. :)
