Thinking of adding one of the mental pets for my tk concept.

How viable are pets right now? Does it matter which role im in for the mental pets?

Thank you.

Summon Nightmares are pretty good w/ the Night Terror adv. The adv also allows one pair of them to be cast for each target, since they are the only formal pet that's target-locked, afaik. Collective Will isn't technically a pet (its actually a sep entity power like Firesnake, Dust Devil, or Gas Pellets- so it won't be buffed by auras and such, can't be killed_targeted, but does scale w/ most of ur attack stats- unlike a pet) but their debuff adv can be pretty good for Ego damage builds.. though I find them to be a bit lethargic in how they act sometimes.

I wouldn't say either are necessary for a good Mentlaist build, but if theme allows it then they aren't bad either.

Also, as of recent power changes, Consume Will's special adv now applies Stress (instead of its own unique debuff), which is the same debuff that Mental Storm applies. However, Stress doesn't stack above 4 per target regardless- so keep that in mind if ur using both powers.

Summon Nightmares isn't particularly viable in high end content, they tend to get obliterated by boss AoEs and they're kind of slow on non-bosses. Collective Will has the problem that the extra pets spawned based on held foes aren't applicable in boss fights, and despawn when the held target is defeated. Also, you have no way of giving the entity orders so it's somewhat likely to attack something you don't want it to attack.

Well yeah, but not being viable on the high-end is something that plagues most pets. I assume at this point if players are inquiring about pets, that they are at least aware of that drawback.

I assume someone asking "how viable are pets right now" doesn't already know the answer.

To be fair, CWill isn't really a pet, so its not gonna quite have the same drawbacks as normal pets in those fights. It does have control issue w/ targeting, but it's special adv can also apply/stack Stress faster than Mental Storm (if it behaves). So I dunno, it could be good, but CO's pet and entity system show quite well how old and clunky the game can be imo :p
