Cats are actually very good at recognizing people most of the time.... most of the time. But, they have their own fur-brained rules that determine how they choose to respond. Cats associate with people because they want people to give them stuff. you CAN teach cats to come when called if you want to... most people don't.
At any rate, one key thing the study ignored is that there is a fundamental difference between dogs and cats. Dogs are pack animals. Cats are communal animals. Thus a dog sees you as the alpha, and a cat sees you as a friend.

Courage is doing what is right even when it isn't popular or safe. Honor is retaining the dignity and virtue in one's self, so it can light the way for others in the darkest of times. Compassion is showing patience and mercy towards others, even when it isn't returned or deserved. A hero is defined by these 3 words, they set him apart from others as a beacon of hope and excellence.
The study in the OP reminds me of one done long ago on Komodo Dragons. A certain group of scientists decided Komodo Dragons were deaf because the over sized lizards ignored them when they yelled at them and made noises.... as if the lizards had any reason to care. It's a lizard... it cares about 3 things, it's safety, making little lizards, and food. If it does not associate the noises you're making with one of those three things it will ignore you.
I mean, the cat defending the kid from that dog doesn't surprise me. If I owned some people who get me food and one of their kids was attacked by a hobo, I'd run over and smack him on the head.

"if i owned some people who get me food..." XD I like how you put that.
