Well when a story meets expectations it can become stale. The reason Superman's greatest nemesis is a human is that it's interesting to see a ultra powerful being stymied by someone without super powers. However if Superman never beats low powered or non powered heroes in contrived cross over fights then it becomes pretty state as well as we're not expecting Superman to win despite his apparent superiority in the power department.

Plot twists need to happen for it to be interesting. It's what made the WW vs Storm part of DC v Marvel fun.
