When one buys up Zen with Astral Diamonds then one is buying them from other players. The exchange is based on players selling Zen for Astral Diamonds. They can buy up the items to get to 'level' the playing field for 5k AD or less an item. So that means people who don't exploit can catch up almost immediately.
