I got this too, but one of my characters (in addition) has a "New Item" icon, probably from getting the Companion quest. Well, I did all that and have it now, but the icon is still there and won't go away. It's a box with dots coming out of it... I'm sure you know the one. It will not leave! =(

Same problem for me, whether the box is there or not there is clicking. You can Pause it for like 30 seconds but it comes back.
