I find that holding down shift to guard doesn't seem to register immediately after using an encounter, or if you drop guard and put it back up again without doing anything else in between. The best work around that I've found is to immediately Cleave after you use an encounter, followed by a quick shift to go into guard…
I've noticed that this seems to happen if I use an encounter ability and immediately block. If I use an ability and swing my sword, I seem to be able to block effectively.
This is making blocking extremely difficult. This has messed up the responsiveness that really makes combat feel so dynamic. I hope they fix this soon because I prefer to feel that I'm in control while fighting, not just button mashing damage abilities.
