When you mail at least certain bound companions you get an option to pay AD to unbind them. At least one STAYS bound after you pay, however. I have no idea how this works for the stone.

Greed - wants the item for the value. Need - actually has a use for the item. Is this such a difficult concept? If any of the prople that like to post "I need money therefore I can need on any drop" have a rational explanation for when "greed" would ever apply under their tortured interpretation I have never seen it.
