I don't know how a companion could avoid a telegraphed attack entirely, but at least getting out of AOE after getting initial damage would be great.

Ok, so I bought an Icon from the vendor in the Protector's Enclave and my Cleric companion couldn't use it, I'm assuming it's too high of a level. I guess I'll just have to farm for a low level Icon, there's not a single one on the Auction House with a buyout price.
