Honestly, STOs bridges paled compared to CO's lairs. The bridges were simply static maps. The only thing you could really customize were the trophy displays. They got a little better when they added the other ship sections like engineering and the lounge. But even then you could only choose between large, medium, or a small map.

CO went the extra mile, by allowing elements within each lair to be changed. And as a bonus, you could mix and match elements from similar packs. So if you really wanted the waterfall from the Natural cave to dress up your Tech cave. Simply buy both and mix and match as you see fit. Sadly, like most of CO, the lairs started off great. Then they simply stopped making anymore and left the entire system half finished and neglected.

They say third time is the charm. Id like to believe that. But so far i've seen Cryptic try personal housing twice and both times it ended up disappointing. I see no point in trying to get them to rush headlong into number three.
Indeed. After reading that, I must admit - I am extremely more partial or my Star Trek fanboi-ism than I am about my Comic Collection (huge Marvel fan; I love anything Jean Grey/Phoenix... Infinity Gauntlet too...)... I mean, I still geek out every now and then when I realize that we have our Communicators and Data Pads... just like while growing up wishing for it as I seen it on TV! Seriously! *eyes his kindle and ipod and geeks out some more*

So that's probably why I still like STO's Sharships better than CO's. None-the-less, you are right - CO's Lairs are WAY more customizable.

Some of those poorly designed at that. In particularly, one was designed so that if the captain were to fall off their chair they would break their neck since the chair was basically on top of a plinth.

Special bridges like the Odyssey looked amazing though.

    Back OT.

As things stand at the moment you're a homeless adventurer with the option of joining up with other homeless adventurers in a club (Guild).

I understand why people don't want something like the starbases where you unlock end game equipment. As a minimum I would like to see some way of adding in a basic guild hall so that your Guild has something they can:

    1) Call home,
    2) Have more than 5 people (foundry limit) in it a given time
    3) Work towards improving together

This would add to the immersion and mean that you could hold a Guild meeting or the like away from public areas. It wouldn't necessarily need to have a huge array of features, but something to add immersion would be nice. If they made it along the lines of a Keep then they could add defend the keep skirmishes/instances like a cross between the instances in STO and Crossroad Keep in NWN2.

I think STOs bridges still work, simply because they are detailed and very well done. Sure they are static, but they are beautiful and there are tons of them to choose from. Even the most fickle person can find a bridge layout they like. And that alone makes them stand out. The choices. It would be hard to be impressed with Neverwinters mounts, if we only had a scattered few as choices.

CO's had promise, but the project was shelved much to soon. Functionality that was promised or implied, never happened. To this day, there are still doors in each lair, meant for things, that will never function. And with only 5 types of lairs, with only a few thematic choices each. Made it really hard for people to find the one choice they could really relate to. In a game where the ENTIRE concept was "Make the hero you want to be" the limited choices was a total disappointment.

If Neverwinter is going to avoid the problems of the past. Housing needs to be something more then simply tacked on. It needs the promise that CO offered with the depth, detail, and array of choices that STO offers. And that is not something that is going to happen over night.

Personal housing? So you want to pay to use the Foundry, with greater restrictions on what you can do in it than the real Foundry?
I wasted five million AD promoting the Foundry.

So you're asking to pay to use the Foundry then, because 'every piece of stuff currently available in the Foundry' is currently available to you, in the Foundry.

If you think Cryptic is going to let you upload your content such as uploading some .gif to use as a banner, that's not going to happen for IP reasons. (We had the IP discussion with them back in Foundry beta)

You can make your own personal lair right now, put the entrance on multiple doors from pretty much any map you feel like, and make your lair look any way you want, for free.

A foundry map is not persistent and can only have 5 people on it. You cannot use it for anything Community Related that doesn't involve questing or more than 5 people. There is no storage space. There's so much more that a Housing System has or can have that makes it nothing like the Foundry as a Whole.

The Foundry itself as a whole cannot be compared to a Housing System. The underlying mechanics for customization however, that should be the foundation for a Housing System in Neverwinter. As well, stating what one thinks Cryptic can, won't, will or will not do is irrelevant to the discussion, as this is a wish list for things of the future, not dwelling upon idles of the past.

The only useful Guild housing in a MMO I have seen is in Grand Fantasia where there was storage , a garden to grow buff plants , and a guild dungeon and a bunch of aesthetics like statues ( this was back when the cap was lvl 75 so it could be vastly different now) .

Also Eden Eternal had Crafters and other vendors you could rescue from dungeons and place in the guild village and also a system where you could allow other players to enter your guild village and levy a tax when they bought materials for crafting from your guild stores ( could be crazy if your guild was the only one with a particular vendor with a important crafting blueprint or other item).

The new crafting system just released is the THIRD ITERATION and as a Lifetime Member of STO it still burns my buttt that the best gear and Starships can only be had through Fleet Vendors - especially after spending a lot of cash on Zen Market starships. This is plain BS. Better than anything you can craft, even better than anything you can buy in the Zen market (!!!)

Hence I've lost my enthusiasm for it. If the gear were *equal* (even in different ways) okay, but no, it's like buying T1 Gear in Zen Market, but must be in Guild to obtain T2/2.5 Gear in Neverwinter. How do you feel after spending 2500 Zen on that T1 Gear now?
This has left a bad taste in my mouth with STO and why I no longer spend any money in the STO Zen Market - even my free Zen (at something like 8700 now?) I'm all-in on Neverwinter for the time being, STO is a "I'm bored, guess Ill do STO for ten minutes" mode.

Ewwwness , I really don't like the sound of that.

Mine or Cryptic's? Either way, it's merely for personal use. I wouldn't mind if it became Cryptic's property once I uploaded it. The rest of my account belongs to Cryptic, so why would that bother me?
As for other users copying my crest, why would you want the same crest as somebody else?

I added a bit - Basically you could upload anything from another Intellectual Property (e.g. WoW) which can then get into murky legal waters.

Maybe. then again, you're not using it for personal gain so it would basically be free advertising. Not to mention it would be kinda hard for them to check. But if that's going to be an issue, I can settle for a bunch of default ones that can be modded in color/text. as long as it's not just 3 or 4. People should have a choice fitting all classes

STO had Fleet badges where the Guild Leaders designed a badge using layered images from presets. Something like that may be what you're after but on a per character basis.

That'll do. A few basic shapes, some weapons, flowers etc that can be placed within, some color and text and you're all set. I'm sure something like that can be created within the foundry system. Not as nice as allowing them to be fully designed by players, but it will do.

You don't need the Foundry at all for that - all you need is a blank space for the crest to appear on certain flags, shields, capes, etc. Associated with your character (or possibly account) would then be an attribute called "crest image" which gets applied to these items in that place.

You can make the image a few ways - fixed images where you change colours and only have a couple of layers (e.g. STO (relevant info starts about 5:30 into this video) and Halo (video here), or where you have several layers of pre-approved images/decals you can add/manipulate like in Army of Two - The Devils Cartel (starts about 3:30 into this video).

EDIT: The other issue with user created images which can be submitted by gif - inappropriate/adult content.

MMOs that I know of that allow custom content to be uploaded to their games have an extensive pre-checking of submitted content. One I know of even had such content need to be approved by the community itself, after its initial check for pornography or blatant copyright violations.

I've suggested this before...tying solo or guild housing to a new Profession, Nobility. Tasks initially center around building and maintaining a small property in one of the adventure zones; later, expanding that land grant or founding new ones, and fortifying one's keep, or dungeon, or manor, or whatever. All tasks have AD costs instead of AD gain (sort of an inverted Leadership profession). Lockboxes could contain hirelings to speed up or improve the quality of tasks as usual.

Yeah, yeah, housing may be a nice thing. Add some exclusive buffs, based on some items put in it, like ur own campfire or a 'trophy' place to give a PvP (just a thought) buff, sruff like that and itll be something to think about.

Oh well, since I dont see it happening in the (far) horizon, one can always design their houses using the Foundry. Just dont mind the random visitor knocking/breaking the door.

I've never see the attraction of purely cosmetic housing in MMOs. If I wanted to build a house I'd play The Sims or similar.

Something with some in-game functionality - even if it's just QoL stuff - would be worthwhile. But not repeating the mistakes of STO should be a priority.

Of course it has to have a use. Even armor racks to display the armors you have saves you bank slots so you can display your collection. Same with companions you don't use. They can walk around the house/garden/we and be "useful" maintaining the house. Or stables for your mount collection requiring some AD to maintain and upgrade. Hire a courier for 10AD a day to access to your storage space at Moneycoins -maybe a 3rd storage you can expand using AD(or professions) like guild banks- is also something that has to be included. I agree that cosmetics alone won't do it for a lot of players. The more useful functions you give the house, the better the AD sink.

I'm a perfect example of it. Cosmetic alone I won't bother (most likely) but if it has some time saving features I'll probably go for it.

What is stopping you guys from implementing some player housing? This would be so freakin' awesome. Allow us to have player housing and the ability to decorate the housing with items such as:

    - Furnature
    - Rugs
    - Chests
    - Sculptures
    - Paintings
    - Weapons
    - Suits of Armor
    - Taxidermy

    ... and much, much more!

What would, also, be cool is to have the ability to form a Guild Hall, Guild Headquarters too.

So please chime in with ideas, opinions, and what ever else you can think of!

that would be interesting specially if the assets are interactive and in the
-wardrobe you can put armors to change later , for pvp,pve,...
    - chests to be a direct link to the bank
    - alchemist furniture only to keep potions
Something like in Oblivion but with purchasing assets as u said and with active links.

But this would require a lot of server resources and i doubt this will become real..
In Star Trek Online , your ship is like a house system (static, only thing you can improve in interior is to add trophies (limited number) on the wall from your achievements or zen shop) and you can have access to anything ,bank, special vendors, auction, additional "profession" tasks from your npcs, (may depends on your ship type too)...in the beginning the professions npc tasks cooldowns were bugged in STO specially for the klingons, i don't know if they fixed it (the klingon chef).
Making such content links (assets are already created and are everywhere in game/foundry) to the Neverwinter may bring more bugs/lags than improvements.
Until then if you really want to have some fun with decorating houses i/d suggest play with the Foundry .
The Foundry is a big plus from me to Cryptic even if its missing some features/assets but there is something interesting to play with :) (if u need a break from dailies).
Moving objects is easy, more easy if u have already played with 3DS Max, Maya, DAZ Studio, Bryce, etc.., creating quests and links is a pain for a beginner even if it looks so easy and there are very complex editors on internet for offline games ( Kings Bounty Editor - one of the most difficult/complex editor i ever saw so far, specially when comes to create new gear sets - took me 2 days to make just 2 of 4 pieces for a set).

srry if got later to much offtopic :)

The key, IMO, is to make player housing functional in some way - maybe they could be account wide and offer access to personal & account bank, mail, etc.

What if, along with the purchase of a home of some kind, you got a special carrier pigeon of some type, which would allow you access to the amenities from your home, even while out and about?

    Nah. Not nice.

Devs would work on it, on a payable thing, but not the major problems - bugs - foundry - balancing etc.
