Any suggestions on opening lockboxes?

With the recent zen and key sales I've decided to buy some enchanted keys. I have 23 atm. I've never really bought many, maybe a few here and there that I used to trade for my coal wards - yeah stupid me, I didn't know they'd all become bind on pickup ..... stupid peridots - actually I love my peridots, it's not their fault, they come from broken homes and need love too :)

So basically I was wondering if any of you'll who open them on a regular basis might have any tips for me such as:

Should I save the keys and wait until I have more?
About how many keys does it take to get to the center of the tootsie roll pop?
Does it help to open them one at a time or just "open another" over and over.
Open them fast or slow? Why do I feel this one's going to get some strange answers :/
Any special spots that you feel gets better results. Got a bad feeling about this question too :/
Or is it all just random chance and nothing you do will matter?

Either way I'm excited. Yeah I know I might just get a bunch of garbage (I'm talking to you enchantment box) but regardless it should be fun. I don't splurge on myself very often so I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for any tips or suggestions, they're much appreciated.

Don't. You want make money from keys. Sell them.

Yeah, this all sounds like a recipe for disappointment.

Better figure out what your goal is first. Pure profit? Probably better to sell them. Fun? Ok, but be prepared to be disappointed if you aren't extremely lucky.

23 keys is enough to have some fun, but not enough to turn a profit without a heaping pile of luck. You can open hundreds of boxes and never see a mount or companion drop, so remember that if you have your heart set on one specific thing, you're better off to save up your AD and buy it directly.

Opening in batches of 5 or 10 is fine. I'll go more if I'm seeing drops I like, including tradebar quantities 10 or greater. I only open boxes while having Gambler's Fortune active from invoking. Does it help? It certainly does not hurt. If I feel that the RNG is not serving me well, I stop.

If you have more than one character, make sure you only open boxes on one of them, as the tradebars are still character-bound and it takes a lot of them to buy anything worthwhile.

Hi and thanks everyone. My main goal is fun. Sure I'd love to get that sweet looking new mount but know I probably won't. I really don't care too much about profits. I have a little over a million AD. Not too much but I've never been too horribly concerned about that. I do just fine in my Black Ice gear in pugs :D I hope I'll get lucky but really I just never ever splurge on myself like this and just want to do it. I wouldn't mind some of the black ice assets or even any number of other drops. Heck even planar idols are fine. I just don't want those horrible enchantments or godawful pet one's either unless I get super lucky and get those upgrade tokens :D Now watch me get a HAMSTER load of Training enchantments, rank 5 hehe.

Yeah it'll probably be a big disappointment but then at least I'll know and won't ever do it again. I like my green gel cube mount just fine :D So pretty much I just want to have some fun and treat myself to something I never do and probably will never be able to do again. If I ever win the lottery though I'm totally buying a few gazillion AD but that's getting way ahead of myself but hey I figure the odds of winning the lotto are much better than getting the mount so I'm already ahead hehe.

Great tip on Gambler's fortune. I'm going to wait till I have that and then open them. And yeah I have super bad luck when it comes to RNG so I don't really have my heart set on anything other than just getting a chance to finally open up some boxes. I figure twenty bucks isn't too much so I'm not out a fortune. I spend more in cigarettes every few days which I so hate doing. Trying to stop atm but that's a whole other story. Thanks everyone.

Hmm, this got me to thinking. If I copy my character over to the test shard would his keys copy over and I could just test out some different lockboxes there and still have my keys on the real server? It might be a fun way for me to open some older lockboxes.

Yes, you can make multiple copies and stack all the keys up by mail to open even more boxes too.

This, of course, is when you'll score a ton of sweet epic mounts. (I speak from experience. :))

Okay, nice and thanks for the info. Think I'm going to try and do that too hehehe. Depending on how big my patch is for test server. I'd love to just play around and open some of the older boxes too :D /Does a happy dance.

Here is my two cents. This weekend I bought way too many, I guess I got lucky on my first two batches (50 boxes each batch) and got two kessels, thought maybe well those will sell and at least make me feel like I did something or even get ahead a bit, which led me to opening a third batch that got me nothing special at all (lots of enchants and the like a few of those AD resonators). I opened a 4th batch and got that skull companion that insults people and that was it from there. I waited until Sunday and opened another 2 batches of lock boxes and got nothing from them (two artifacts from the provision boxes that sell about 300k these days).

I think i'm never opening lockboxes again, I wanted the Tenser's Floating Disc mount but so far even if I sold everything I got I wouldn't have enough AD to buy it. About the only thing I really got from the lockboxes was a huge boost in enchantments which is allowing me to craft up a bunch of rank 7's and some rank 8's which is nice and I did get a bunch of plague fires which so far is pretty nice, so if I ever feed enough stuff into to rank up the normal one I crafted i'll be able to make it into a greater (the tarmalune bars did make it so that I could buy about 8 or so coalescent wards which is also another nice bonus but not sure it makes up for what was spent to get there).

If you are going to buy zen to use to buy keys i'd say sell the zen on the exchange and just buy the stuff you want in most cases you'll come out more ahead. If you are using AD to buy keys, again i'd say just spend your AD to buy something else, ideally buy greater marks of potency and make your artifact and enchantment upgrades (those are more important have a much higher impact on performance). Armor and weapon enchants are not that necessary and usually not a huge or even moderate gain from less to normal or normal to greater or even greater to perfect. I'd say spend your ad wards to craft a lesser version of whatever sounds good to use (for min max reasons soul forged is pretty hard to beat and often the vorpal tends to come out on top for use in most scenarios and tends to be the most universally benefically not matter what class you play). IF you can afford to make normal versions that is a good sweet spot for what you have to spend on any type of edge in gameplay (again soulforged really doesn't need to be upgraded past lesser unless you want to look like you just walked up out of hades).

Well that went beyond bad. Pretty much worse case scenario. All my boxes on test server were nice. No mount or companion or anything but was very happy with what I had gotten so I go and do it on live and ugh!

I got 8 of those awful companion runestone boxes, that's one third of my keys right there. Out of those eight boxes I ended up with 12 Profane Runestones, Rank 6, a HAMSTER load of other rank 6, one Eldritch rank 7 and an arcane rank 7. Then I got a lot of enchantment boxes and got nothing good out of them, ended up with a lot of Lesser marks of power, lesser stability stone, lesser everything, oh I did get 3 Greater Marks of Potency which is the only thing decent I got out of 23 keys.

Also got two profession packs, think I got a couple of green assets but seriously even though I didn't expect to get anything great I really thought I'd get something almost sort of halfway decent. At least I learned a valuable lesson. Any money spent will never be on keys. I'll just buy ad or the items I want. That was just really beyond horrible and I'm honestly thinking about deleting every single freaking Item I received just because I don't have room for them and really don't give a HAMSTER about them. It was fun opening boxes but truly was a let down especially when over and over it just kept giving me the exact same companion runestone box. I even went to a different zone after getting five of them in a row. I didn't want much, just a little bit of variety :( Sad thing is I knew this was going to happen. Arrgghhh! Okay I'm through ranting. But yeah, unless you have a lot of money don't bother or unless you get lucky. I'm sure some people get nice stuff in one or two boxes, just not most of us. Good luck to you all. I think I'm through for a long while, or until I win that lotto :D

Oh wait, I did get a black ice enchantment, rank 7. I'm not really too upset. I got to open some boxes but you're all very right, don't go into it expecting great items or making a profit. Just have fun. I also completely forgot about the trade bars. I need to see how many I got :D

Oh I also got sixty of those companion upgrade points, thirty more and I can upgrade someone to lv. 30 so I keep finding more and more good news. All my companions now have rank 6 or 7 runestones and I have enough stuff to upgrade several of my artifacts to max lv. when the time comes - all things I did not have so it's not so bad after all. Just not a sweet flying hover mount disc thingy lol.

40 keys --about 45$--and the total value of all my items (excluding trade bars, which I now have 450 of) are about 450-500k. Lock boxes should be for splurge gambling, so don't expect anything mindblowing. It's for fun :)

My suggestion is DON'T. I opened 300 lockboxes and the end result was I could have just turned the zen used into AD that would have been about 15 million at the current exchange and just bought stuff from people opening them. I really wanted that Tenser's Disk though.

If you have a HAMSTER ton of AD to spend i'd personally suggest saving it and just buy what gets flooded onto the market or use it actually upgrade your enchants since again the market is flooded and lots of them are cheap or were.
